Police partner up to combat local crime
The Kingston Police Department is partnering with the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and state police to combat crime in the community, officials said in a press release.
“We are asking for all available resources to keep everyone in our community safe and secure,” city police Chief Egidio Tinti said in Monday’s press release. “Our number one concern is the safety of our residents. Having the additional assistance will mean seamless sharing of information between agencies, because, as we know, crime doesn’t stop at the city limits.”
State police are providing “multiple vehicles” each day for patrol in Kingston and three dep
uties from the Sheriff’s Office are assisting the city police department’s Special Investigative Unit for cases involving guns, narcotics, and gang activities, according to the release.
“Right now there is an immediate need to ensure that every person in our community feels safe,” Kingston Mayor Steve Noble said in the release. “By bringing in additional officers to be a presence in our neighborhoods and others with specialized expertise, we are doing everything in our power to protect our residents and solve these recent crimes.”
The recent crimes include three unsolved homicides in Kingston, all of which involved fatal shootings. The first occurred in late October, followed by another in early November and the most recent in mid-February.
Daniel Thomas, 27, was killed on Oct. 24, 2019, near the intersection of Cedar and Prospect streets in Midtown; Myron T. Moye, 36, was slain Nov. 1, 2019, in the house at 38 W. O’Reilly St., also in Midtown; and Ashley Stephan Dixon, 31, was fatally shot Feb. 11 outside Building 34-48 at the Stuyvesant Charter apartment complex on Sheehan Court.
Police have said they don’t believe the Thomas and Moye cases are linked, and Ulster County District Attorney David Clegg has said the Dixon killing does not appear to be linked to either of the other two.
Last week, an Ulster County grand jury handed up a sealed indictment for second-degree murder in one of the homicides. No information was made publicly available about which case that indictment referred to.
Kingston police also still are working to solve a nonfatal shooting that occurred on Franklin Street in Midtown on Dec. 29, 2019, and shots being fired at a house on East St. James Street on Feb. 14.
