Virtual/ hybrid format for Kingston Classic
Runners can choose to run the revised courses or the distances of their choosing
The Kiwanis Kingston Classic, canceled last year because of the the COVID-19 pandemic, will return this year, although as a virtual/hybrid event.
A statement on the Classic website said, “the membership of the Kiwanis Club of Kingston wants to keep the health and safety of all our runners, volunteers, sponsors, first responders and the entire community as our number one priority.”
The Classic was scheduled for Sunday, April 25.
This would be the 38th event. The Classic, begun in 1982, was not held last year and in 2010.
The virtual event will continue to have the 5-kilometer, 1.5-mile and the iconic 10K races. Participants can register for free with an option to donate. The proceeds will benefit the community programs and scholarship fund that the Kiwanis support.
Participants may register at kiwaniskingstonclassic.com. Every registrant will receive an email that will include information on how to submit their times, a virtual bib, a race certificate, a map and a detailed description of a revised course.
The revised course was designed to utilize much of the current Classic course set in the Rondout Strand area. Much of it is now on the Kingston Rail Trail, plus the new Hudson River Brickyard Trail.
All three courses are out-andback, starting and finishing at the same spot on the Kingston Rail Trail opposite the New Central Baptist Church on the East Strand. The start/finish line, turnarounds, and all turns will be clearly marked — utilizing signage and flour, which will be regularly refreshed — for all participants to be able to navigate.
Runners may either run the revised Classic courses or the distance of their choosing elsewhere between April 24 and May 2. Results must be posted by May 3.
All registrants will be automatically added to a Kiwanis Lottery, with the drawing to take place after May 2.
The 39th Kingston Classic is tentatively scheduled for April 24, 2022.
