Pine Plains/Rhinebeck wins season opener
Mount Academy shuts out Dover; Spackenkill beats Webutuck, 9-0
Sid Stracher’s 32-yard TD run gave Pine Plains/Rhinebeck a 20-18 win over Spackenkill in the teams’ 8-Man football opener.
ELLENVILLE, N.Y. » A wild finish gave Rhinebeck High a 1-0 double-overtime boys soccer victory over Ellenville Friday.
The teams battled a scoreless regulation and first OT in the Mid-Hudson Athletic League contest and were nearly four minutes into the second overtime when Gavin Baxter was awarded a penalty kick for Ellenville.
Rhinebeck goalkeeper Brendan Hines made a diving block to his left to stop Baxter’s shot, then stopped a rebound. Hines punted the ball nearly 60 yards. The Blue Devils failed to clear, and Devin Greene lifted a long shot into the far post for the game-winner not 20 seconds after the Hines saves.
Rhinebeck, 2-0 overall, missed on a one-on-one in the first OT.
“What a heartbreaker for us,” said Ellenville coach Maxwell Mead, whose team is now 3-1.
Hines finished with five saves. Ellenville keeper Matt Helgesen had three.
Mount Academy 4, Dover 0
At Dover Plains, Darren Baird scored two goals
and Malcolm Meier dished out two assists to lead (3-0) Mount Academy over Dover.
Connor Huleatt and Andrew Rimes also scored and Martin Mendoza added an assist for the Eagles.
Leon Maendel did not have to make a save to earn the shutout win. Dover
goalie Andrew Flint had two saves.
Spackenkill 9, Webutuck 0
At North East, Aidan Yereance had two goals and two assists, Travis Kilpert scored once and dished out
two assists and Jeet Shahani also assisted on a pair of goals to lead Spackenkill to victory.
Selamu Gendron had a goal and an assist and Brian Breslow, Christian Balbo, Chris Sulca, Dylan Updike and Amelio Breglia also scored for the Spartans.
