Kingston loses first meet by a point

KINGSTON, N.Y. » Monroe-Woodbury won a battle of undefeated girls swim teams by the narrowest of margins Friday, besting Kingston 93-92 in an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association meet.

Under COVID-19 protocols, the meet took place virtually with each team competing in its home pool. The teams posted their own results, so there was never a running tally to know which team was leading.

Monroe led 87-84 going into the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Tigers’ team of Caroline and Katherine Steeves, Gianna Vertullo and Mallory Sullivan won the event, but the Crusaders’ placed second, third and fifth to gain the six points needed to clinch the overall victory.

Kingston was 6-0 coming into the meet. Monroe is now 8-0.

Kelsey O’Brien won the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke to pace the Crusaders.

Caroline Steeves led the Tigers, taking the 200 free and the 100 backstroke. Ali Mitchell (individual medley), Emily McCord (butterfly) and Ellie Meyer (100 free) also won for Kingston. Mitchell and McCord placed second in the breaststoke and 50 free, respectively. Sullivan scored third-place points in the distance freestyle races.

Mitchell, Meyer, and McCord teamed with Jeanine Ohene Agyel to win both the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.
