GREGORY G. GEBERT

WOODSTOCK- Greg died peacefully at home on the morning of Feb. 23, 2021. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 21, 1929 to Albert A. and Hulda Gebert, he travelled with his family as they pursued construction work during the Depression. Greg said that he’d lived in every state east of the Mississippi, rarely for more than a few months in any one place, before the family settled down in Union, N.J., in 1938. He completed his secondary education at Union High School in 1946, and then matriculated to MIT, graduating in 1950 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He served in the USAF from November 1950 to August 1953. Upon graduating from Ofcers’ Candidate School in March of 1952 he and Avis Carter were married in her parents’ living room in Woolwich, Maine. As newlyweds they lived in Albuquerque, N.M., while Greg received training as a special weapons ofcer at Sandia Base and later worked at Turner AFB in Albany, Ga., as part of an atomic weapons assembly team. He was released from active duty to the reserves in August 1953 and joined Carrier Corporation as a development engineer in Syracuse, N.Y., where their two older children were born. The family moved to Woodstock, N.Y., in 1961, where their youngest child was born. There Greg worked for Rotron Manufacturing Company as an applications engineer and in various marketing capacities until his retirement in May of 1989. He served as the town appointed chairman of the Woodstock Environmental Conservation Commission for ten years from 1972. In retirement he and Avis travelled overseas extensively and cruised the Eastern seaboard for 18 years in their sloop Skimmer. Greg was welcoming and generous, and was always up for a good time, forming bonds of friendship that lasted a lifetime and spanned the globe. He is predeceased by his wife, Avis, and survived by his three sons, Carter, Andrew and Nathan, and his sister Joan, her husband John Fraser, and their daughter Carolyn Fraser Fleming.
