N.Y. » A 62-year-old Saugerties woman was hospitalized in stable but serious condition Sunday night after the bicycle she was riding struck a pedestrian on Washington Avenue Extension, town police said. Police said the woman was thrown from her bicycle in the collision and struck her head on the pavement, knocking her unconscious.

Police said Sunday that Star Berzal of Malden was injured when her bicycle struck 36-year-old Caleb Warwick of Saugerties, who was walking on Washington Avenue Extension when the collision occurred at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday.

The collision occurred near 355 Washington Avenue Extension, police said.

Warwick, who told police he was unhurt, was issued a summons for failing to comply with the New York State Pedestrian Law, police said.

“Investigation by police established that 36-year-old Caleb Warwick of Saugerties was walking on Washington Avenue Extension when he was struck from behind by a bicyclist, 62-year-old Star Berzal of Malden, town of Saugerties,” a press release said. “Berzal was thrown from the bicycle, striking her head on the pavement, knocking her unconscious.”

At the time of the crash, Warwck was wearing dark clothing and was walking on the wrong side of the road — walking with traffic and not against traffic as the law requires, police said.

Berzal and her bicycle were in compliance with the law for nighttime bicycle riding, police said.

Berzal, who suffered a head injury, was treated at the scene by paramedics from Diaz Ambulance and taken to HealthAlliance Hospital’s Broadway Campus in Kingston. There, she was stabilized before being taken to Westchester Medical Center.

Saugerties police were assisted by Diaz Ambulance and the Malden-West Camp Fire Department.
