Cara Countryman of Stone Ridge, a student at SUNY Plattsburgh, was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest alldiscipline collegiate honor society.
Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
Shawn Zerafa of Highland, a student at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y., was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the international academic honor society for twoyear institutions of higher learning.
Those inducted into Phi Theta are matriculated students who have met standards including a grade point average of 3.71 or higher. The college’s Alpha Xi Sigma chapter recognizes and promotes scholarship, develops leadership, encourages service and cultivates fellowship among qualified students of the college.
Zerafa is in the individual studies academic program.
Hailey Newell of New Paltz, a student at Alvernia University in Reading, Pa., earned the Franciscan Servant Leader Award.
Newell was one of more than 40 students to earn recognition from the Holleran Center for Community and Global Engagement for their dedication as a servant leader at Alvernia University. During the ceremony, students received service awards and pins for their service accomplishments.
The honorees all performed more than 100 hours of service in a variety of tracks during their time at Alvernia. They included helping lead alternative breaks and university-wide service days, completing sustainability projects, participating in educational enrichment opportunities, and helping meet the needs of vulnerable populations in the
community.
Newell is a New Paltz High School graduate.
Three area residents attending SUNY Oneonta — Chad McPeek of Saugerties, Raveena Kaur of Ellenville, and Cassidy Napolitano of Wallkill — were among 55 students honored for their dedication to sustainability efforts on campus, thanks to the new Green Dragon Recognition Program.
New this year, the Green Dragon Recognition Program (organized by the Office of Sustainability) seeks to celebrate and recognize students who have shown a commitment to sustainability during their time at SUNY Oneonta. Through this program, students can earn points by successfully completing sustainability designated courses and by participating in sustainability-themed clubs, research, leadership opportunities and events.
Honorees were recognized during an invitation-only receptionon April 22 on campus. To earn an invitation to the event, students had to earn 350 sustainability engagement points through participation in courses, clubs, research, events, etc. by April 22. The reception was one of the culminating events of SUNY Oneonta’s annual Green Dragon Week, which showcases the campus’ commitment to sustainability through a variety of events and activities and celebrates Earth Day.
Three area residents — Robert Pfeifer of New Paltz, and Kiyan Hocek and James Elizares vonBaeyer, both of Wallkill — earned the dean’s award with distinction at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., for the fall semester.
Students earn the dean’s award with distinction by achieving a grade point average of 3.6 or higher.
Pfeifer is majoring in political science and is a graduate of Oakwood Friends School. Hocek is majoring in physics and is a graduate of Pine Bush High School. VonBaeyer is majoring in biochemistry and is a graduate of Wallkill High School. Eleven area residents — Laura Van Aken of Ulster Park, Monroe Maki of Shokan, Aidan Sheedy of New Paltz, Jordan Fatone-Ingenio of Highland, Clare Flannery of Hyde Park, Andrew Cubberly and Ryan Priebe, both of LaGrangeville; Katherine Langley of Pleasant Valley, Tomas Rodina of Wingdale, Alex Santeramo of Pawling and Nicolas Ada of Canaan — were named to the dean’s list at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., for the fall semester.

Griffin Diana of Marlboro was named to the dean’s list at Columbus State Community College in Ohio for the fall semester.
