Hudson Valley landscape art showcased in Saugerties exhibition

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. » “Locally Sourced: Hudson Valley Landscape Art” is on display at Emerge Gallery, 228A Main St., through Sunday, May 22.

The exhibition includes art of various styles and mediums — acrylic, collage, drawings, mixed media, monoprints, oil, pastel, photography, sculpture, and watercolor — inspired by landscape and waterscapes of the Hudson Valley and Catskills regio. A virtual curator’s tour and artists discussion is scheduled for Sunday, May 1, at 3 p.m. live on the Emerge Gallery YouTube channel. Artwork will be available to view and purchase online through the gallery shop on artsy.net with additional work exclusive to Artsy.

The Hudson Valley has been inspiring artists for centuries, from the Hudson Valley River School to the current influx of transplants setting up home in the region. Over 60 artists from the Hudson Valley area have been moved by the hikes, road trips, and the vistas people pass every day to pick up a camera, put brush to canvas, or work in clay, paper and other media. “Locally Sourced” includes art inspired by the Esopus and Hudson Rivers, Ashokan Reservoir, Cooper Lake, Kaaterskill Falls, Olanna, Shawangunk Mountains, Vanderbilt Estate, locations in Kingston and Saugerties, and other familiar places throughout the Hudson Valley.

Artists Linda Champanier and Hanna Gordon were both moved by the Vanderbilt estates for their oil and pastel paintings, while Susan Angeles — splitting her time between Kerhonkson and New York City — found inspiration in her hikes during the isolation. Her mixed media work on canvas incorporates natural elements, including tree roots and a hornet’s nest, in depicting an autumn scene overlooking Lake Minnewaska.

Some artists stayed close to home and the familiar. Elin Menzies is drawn to the beauty everywhere in the Hudson Valley, but sometimes likes to paint what is right outside her home in Saugerties. The watercolor included in “Locally Sourced” captured a fox in her rhubarb patch. “Foxes are such beautiful animals,” she said in a press release. “They fit silently into the landscape, and it takes my breath away when I suddenly catch sight of one.”

Artist Linda Schultz was also drawn to the familiar — a friend’s backyard on Fishcreek Road. What she created is a freestanding sculptural work that breathes new life into the traditional landscape painting.

The exhibition also includes a collection of lanterns from the travels of Saugerties’ creative visionary Kelli Bickman. The paper lanterns are mixed with memorabilia and magical relics by the artist’s daughter. She created a happy, light-filled, playful environment that hung over the artist’s kitchen at the Odd Fellow’s Temple building in the village for eight years. Bickman is sharing the joyous installation with the community before moving on to her next adventure.
