DEAN EDWARD DELLAY

-

Dean Edward Dellay, 70, of New Haven, CT and formerly of New Paltz, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 12, 2022 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, CT. Born June 29,1952 in Kingston, NY, he was the son of the late John J. and Patricia Bosworth Dellay. Dean spent his childhood and early adulthood in New Paltz, NY. He attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School in New Paltz and Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie, NY. Dean graduated from the State University of New York at New Paltz with a double major in Communications and Psychology. While at SUNY New Paltz, he was the Director of Music of the student-run radio station. During that time, he is fondly remembered for producing an audio recording of Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are” with his younger siblings and mother. Moving to the Boston, MA area, Dean worked at Mass General Hospital for several years and was involved in study groups of eating disorders and depression. While living in Newton Corners, he would watch every April the throngs of runners compete in the Boston Marathon.

Dean returned to school later in life and graduated from Yale University School of Nursing with a master’s degree in nursing. He was a licensed Registered Nurse and specialized in psychiatric nursing. Dean was employed at Yale New Haven Hospital, and later at Maxim Healthcare Services where he assisted in the administration of clinical trials for pharmaceutical companies. Besides his interest in medicine, he could dismantle and rebuild computers, particularly Apple products. He was self-taught in this regard and lent a helping hand to less computer savvy family and friends. Dean also had a passion for listening to NPR, as well as a variety of Podcasts, including “This American Life,” “Fresh Air” and “Snap Judgment.” Dean was intelligent and witty, had an incredible memory, and was an excellent writer and a very thoughtful soul. He was a dedicated and conscientious healthcare professional. Dean ultimately chose to care for others in his family. His first foray into caregiving was for his brother Michael, later for his father in North Carolina, and most recently for his cousin Sherry in Connecticut.

Dean is survived by two sisters, Meg Dellay of Hurley, NY and Regina McCorkle of LaGrangeville, NY; three brothers, John A. of Kingston, NY, Robert of New Paltz, NY, and Patrick of East Hampton, NY; close childhood cousins Sherburne Stidfole, Nicholas Houze and Harry Houze; and many other cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Weglinski, and a brother Michael Dellay. A remembrance gathering for Dean will be held in Spring of 2023 in the Hudson Valley. Crematory arrangements were entrusted to Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home of New London, CT. Online condolences can be made at www. fultontherouxnewlondon.com.
