Shanahan earns spot in district title match

Bishop Shanahan knocked off previously unbeaten Pennridge to earn a berth in the District 1 Class AAA girls volleyball championsh­ip. The Eagles won, 25-12, 25-18, 25-13.

The Bishop Shanahan girls volleyball team knocked off previously unbeaten Pennridge to reach the District 1 Class AAA final Thursday at Abington High School.

The Eagles (17-4) won in a three-game sweep over the top seed, 25-12, 25-18, 25-13.

Fifth-seeded Shanahan will face No. 2 and defending district champion Upper Merion in the championsh­ip game at Abington at 1:30 p.m.

Pennridge (18-1) will take on Garnet Valley in the third-place game preceed- ing the final.

Ice Hockey

BISHOP SHANAHAN 7, MONSIGNOR BONNER 2 >> Joseph Moran, Brandon Fonticoba and Ryan Conners had two goals apiece to lead the Eagles to the EPIHA victory at the Skatium. Moran also assed an assists. PJ McAllister scored the final goal and Cameron Dowling notched a pair of assists. Alex DeGarmo made 29 saves in the win.

College Women’s Cross Country

CIAA CHAMPIONSH­IPS>> The Lincoln University’s women’s cross country team were crowned CIAA champions with 59 team points. This was the first CIAA championsh­ip for the Lions since joining the conference in 2010.

Senior Shana Brown led the Lions with a thirdplace finish, crossing the line with a time of 19:33. Two others placed in the top 10 with senior Alexis Cubbage’s sixth-place finish (19:54) and sophomore Sarah Gray’s eighth place finish (20:29). Sophomore Genae Butler placed 12th (20:56), senior Ashley Torres was 30th (22:27), senior Samiyah Salih was 31st (22:46) and sophomore Emani Parsons was 34th in 23:04.

Virginia State’s TaylorAshl­ey Bean won the women’s 5K, finishing in 19:27.

Men’s Cross Country

CIAA CHAMPIONSH­IPS >> Senior Kyle Edwards finished second overall at the CIAA Championsh­ips leading Lincoln to a fifth-place finish with 120 team points.

In the men’s 8K, Edwards was the runner-up earning All-CIAA honors blazing the course in a time of 26:12 just one second behind the winner, Bowie State’s Chick Ndjami (26:11). Federico Ghelli was 11th overall with a time of 27:32.

Sophomore Ira Hunt finished 27th in 29:27. Senior Keith Taylor (38th) was next for Lincoln, followed by junior Kemoi Charles (42nd), junior Henry Alston (45th), and senior Miles Green (50th).

Virginia Union won the men’s championsh­ip taking the team title with 26 points. Bowie State finished second and Virginia State took third.
