World Diabetes Day: The YMCA of the Brandywine Valley is focusing on diabetes awareness and prevention at branch Wellness Wednesday events on November 12. Informative chats and screenings will be held during the morning and early evening at the Brandywine Y, Coatesville; Jennersville Y, West Grove; Kennett Area Y, Kennett Square; West Chester Area Y, Airport Road; Upper Main Line Y, Berwyn and Lionville Community Y, Exton. To encourage residents to take the first step to healthier living, the Y will offer a $1 joiner fee day on Friday, Nov. 14, World Diabetes Day, through Sunday, Nov.16. Lyme disease: Lyme Disease Association President Pat Smith will be presenting a talk, Lyme & OtherTick-Borne Diseases: A National Overview & The Role of LDA to the Lyme Disease Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania, an LDA affiliate, on Nov. 12, 7 pm at the Genesis building in downtown Kennett Square. The Powerpoint presentation will include the epidemiology of Lyme and tickborne diseases, the latest information on political issues surrounding Lyme disease, and the role of the LDA. NOTE: This meeting is on the second Wednesday of November (not the usual third Wednesday). Also, the location is different. See www.lymepa.org for details, maps, and directions.
VA Adult Day Health care: This month, the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center began offering a Mobile Adult Day Health Care program at the American Legion Post 602 in Spring City In total, the medical center now offers the program in three locations in- cluding Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 845 in Downingtown, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 106 in West Chester. Approximately 50 elderly or disabled Veterans participate in the social and supportive program, which takes place in each location one day a week. Through the Mobile Adult Day Health Care program, Veterans who live in their own homes join VA health care professionals for recreational activities. A typical day consists of some combination of coffee social time, music, therapeutic exercise, current event discussion, trivia, art and other leisure activities. The program takes place at each site one day a week. Veterans must be enrolled and eligible for VA health care to participate. Veterans and their family members who are interested in participating in the program should call program coordinator, Mandy Trammel at 610384-7711, extension 6082. Oral Cancer Screening: The Jennersville Regional Hospital Cancer Program will offer free Oral Cancer Screenings by appointment on Monday, Nov. 10, 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. As part of the screening, Michael Ward, M.D. and Timothy Downey, M.D., board-certified otolaryngologists, will provide quick and painless examinations of the mouth and neck. Information about oral cancers, early detection and prevention is also provided. Individuals who smoke, chew tobacco or drink alcohol on a regular basis should be screened on a regular basis for this disease.
