Rosalind (Roz) Verbits Eisenstadt, formerly of West Chester

-

Rosalind (Roz) Verbits Eisenstadt, 78, a founding member of Beth Chaim Reform Congregation, died Nov. 24, 2014, from complications resulting from a fall. She resided for decades in West Chester, before moving to Harrison House in Coatesville.

Mrs. Eisenstadt was the wife of the late Ralph Eisenstadt, a professor at West Chester University.

She is survived by a son Paul, grandchildren Carrie, Mark, Kevin and Christina, and two great-grandchildren. Her son Michael preceded her in death earlier this year.

Mrs. Eisenstadt grew up in South Philadelphia. Her father was a tailor specializing in naval officer uniforms, and then he and his wife owned a neighborhood grocery store where Rosalind worked growing up.

She met her husband at a local synagogue event after he had moved to Philadelphia with his parents after World War II. Her husband’s family, German Jews, had fled Germany prior to the war, first to Paris and then to China where her father-in-law practiced dentistry. Roz devoted almost two decades of her life to taking care of her in-laws as their health declined.

Mrs. Eisenstadt and her late husband were instrumental in forming the Jewish synagogue, Beth Chaim Reform Congregation in Malvern, the only Reform synagogue in Chester County. They hosted many of the early planning meetings and were active supporters of the effort to create a synagogue aimed at families of mixed faiths where all would be welcome. Beth Chaim opened in 1992, and Mrs. Eisenstadt was an active member of the congregation for 20 years until health issues curtailed her participation.

Mrs. Eisenstadt was an avid reader, and kept up on current events. She loved to cook, and was famous for her brisket. She spoke her mind, but was very open and caring with people. She became “bubbe” (grandma) to many others outside her family.

There will be a Memorial Service Friday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. at Beth Chaim Reform Congregation, 389 Conestoga Road, Malvern, PA 19355.

She, and the remains of her late husband, will then be interred at Haym Saloman Memorial Park, 200 Moores Road, Malvern, PA 19355.

A Shiva Luncheon will then be served in the Synagogue Service Hall.

Donations in her memory may be made to Beth Chaim Reform Congregation at the above address.
