Phyllis Bailey Martin of West Chester
Phyllis Bailey Martin, born in 1921 in Landenberg, Pa., passed to her reward on Dec. 2, 2014.
Her parents, George Bacchus and Marguerite Martin Bailey, predeceased her, as did 12 of her 13 siblings.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Norman L. Martin; their children Judith McCoy, Kathleen Cericola, Maureen Thompson, Daniel Martin, and Mark Martin; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Rodger F. Bailey.
Phyllis distinguished herself as a registered nurse in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II in Europe with the 109th Evacuation Hospital, receiving a Bronze Star for meritorious service.
She graduated from Kennett Consolidated High School (1939) and the Chester County Hospital School of Nursing (1943) prior to her entry into the service.
After many years of travel with her husband in the Army, they settled in West Chester and traveled to visit children and grandchildren in Germany, Florida, Ohio, California, and Massachusetts. To her family, she was a loving wife in support of Norman’s long Army career and for many years beyond; as a mother and grandmother providing love, encouragement, and support; as a confidante to many in her large, extended family.
Services were held Friday.
In lieu of f lowers, donations may be made to West Chester United Methodist Church, 129 South High Street, West Chester, Pa. 19382 (Memo: United Methodist Women).
