Lisa Brown’s Kona Ice truck will travel the streets of southern Chester County.

WEST GROVE » Mr. Softee is going to have some company this summer in the form of a Kona Shaved Ice truck.

Lisa Brown, 46, of the West Grove area said she has always been interested in food trucks, and the idea of getting a franchise for one that sells a realtively healthful product appealed to her.

She said she will make the rounds of southern Chester County as soon as the cold weather breaks and the averages go above 50 degrees. She also wants to make appearances at Little League games, school festivals, openings, weddings, festivals and even private parties

The product, she said, is not exactly like water ice. She described it as fluffy like snow.

When the children purchase a cone, they have the opportunity to add a variety of flavorings that spew from spigots on the side of the truck. Those flavors include “tiger blood,” pina colada, Godzilla purple, blueberry-rasberry, lemon-lime and cherry, among others.

“Wait till you see the truck,” she said. “It’s colorful with Kona characters, Calypso music, flashes and LED lighting. I can’t wait,” she said.

Brown’s territory for Kona ice goes from Oxford to Kennett Square and a little area south of West Chester. She said shew would ride around in evenings and weekends with a little help from her daughters and husband, Dennis.

One of the features of Kona ice is that they make a habit of giving back a percentage of profits to worthy causes. Another benefit that Brown likes is that is has only 40 percent of the sugar of regular water ice and has earned the stamp of a “smart snack,” which translate into being allowed in schools.

Brown said she bought into the franchise with a loan and hopes to continue the selling Kona Ice into future years. “I’ve always had an interest in food trucks, and I have a background in nutrition. It’s going to be fun,” she said.
