The board of supervisors voted to grant additional funding to help prevent road and bridge erosion on Tuesday.

Roughly a month and a half ago, a homeowner noticed Shamona Creek eroding the soil near Dowlin Forge Road’s intersection with Peck Road.

According to Township Manager Doug Hanley, the additional $100,000 will allow township employees to place roughly 250 feet of rock along the roadway to prevent further erosion.

“We hope it will stop the erosion from moving any closer,” he said.

Hanley said this funding is in addition to the $200,000 the highway department received earlier this year for road repairs and snow removal.

Once the township noticed, they contacted Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to verify the situation, and to provide emergency permits necessary for the township to take action.

According to Hanely, the DEP gave the township permits roughly a week and a half ago, and repairs are scheduled to start on Monday. At the meeting he estimated the project would take roughly a month to finish.

“These funds will also be used to help reinforce two bridges in the area,” Hanley said.

The bridge near Kingston Road and Dowlin Forge Road, and the bridge near Fillman Road will be reinforced to help withstand erosion.
