Week 7 proved that the Ches-Mont League is still has some explosive offensives and no game proved that more than Downingtown West’s 59-49 win over West Chester East.

Week 7 proved that the Ches-Mont League is still has some explosive offensives and no game proved that more than Downingtown West’s 59-49 win over West Chester East. The pair combined for over 1,100 yards of total offense.

For the Whippets, Jake Barr scored an incredible six touchdowns and for the Vikings, quarterback Jon Jon Jon Roberts threw for 363 yards on the West defense, a week after lighting up Coatesville for 454 yards. Sophomore running back Jared Cooper rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns. He is an emerging star for the Vikings.

No team has improved more dramatically than Avon Grove. The Red Devils are now 4-3 and really laid a whipping on West Chester Henderson last week. When head coach Harry O’Neill took the Avon Grove job two seasons ago, I thought Avon Grove would get better but to do it in such a short fashion is a real testament to the Kids and coaching staff. ... It appears that Unionville has the upper hand in the Ches-Mont American Conference race. The Indians gutted out a 2118 win over a tough Great Valley team Saturday afternoon. Led by the passing and running of quarterback Brendan Boyle, Unionville won the game with 47 seconds left when Boyle hit Elan Nash on a pretty 19yard touchdown pass for the win. If the Indians win their final three regular season games, they would likely host a first-round playoff game. ... No team seems more dependent on its quarterback than Coatesville and with good reason. When Jordan Young went out with severe cramps Friday night against Downingtown East, you could almost feel the air come out of the Red Raiders sideline. Young is an awesome player and his play on defense Friday night in the first half was nothing short of great.

Coatesville must win out to qualify for the district playoffs now. The Red Raiders’ season finale against West Chester Rustin could be an elimination game for both clubs. Avon Grove visits Coatesville this week. ... With the PIAA going to six classifications for football next season, leagues have the option of playing 10 games with one scrimmage or nine games with two scrimmages. The ChesMont League will go with the 10 game option, which in my humble opinion is the right way to go. ... Around District 1, in Class AAAA, Upper Dublin continues to impress with a 7-0 record and averaging 47 points per game. The schedule may be a little suspect but the Cardinals are a handful. In Class AAA, Academy Park is the No. 1 seed and look to be the best team in that bracket.

And in District 12, St.Joseph’s Prep routed La Salle and the pair will likely meet again for the District 12 final.
