Mighty Macs storm back for win

The Immaculata men’s basketball team erased a 13-point deficit to edge Rosemont, 90-89, on senior night Wednesday.

The Mighty Macs (12-12, 10-7 CSAC) closed the game on a 16-2 run as Roy Ferrell Jr. led the way with 29 points.

Junior Matt Simon had 12 points, junior Michael Griffin III all had nine points, and junior Michael Sturdivant Jr. chipped in with eight.

Trailing 87-74 with 3:25 remaining, the Mighty Macs got a spark from Will Chapman and Ferrell Jr. After a Tony Calamaro layup, Chapman got fouled as he laid one in to convert a three-point play to cut the deficit to 87-79 with 2:22 to go. Following a missed free throw by Rosemont on the front end of a one-andone, Ferrell Jr. laid one in and theMacs were the closest they had been since the first half at 87-81 with exactly two minutes remaining.

Ferrell Jr. then delivered yet another clutch basket when he drove the right side of the lane, got the layup to go and was fouled as it went through the hoop to tie the game at 89-89. He then knocked down the free throw to give the Mighty Macs their first lead of the day at 90-89 with 7.4 seconds left on the clock.

Rosemont had one last chance, but theMacs forced a steal toclose out the game.

Women’s Basketball

NEUMANN 79, IMMACULATA 62 >> Following a tight first half, Neumann pulled away in the third period to down Immaculata in the CSAC victory. TheMightyM­acs (7-17, 7-8 CSAC) had three players score in double digits. Reilly Larkin led the way with 22 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Tamyra Laws recorded a double-double with 20 points, a team-leading 11 blocks and three blocked shots. Dia Veneziano added 12 points to the Immaculata effort. Tess Kieffer grabbed seven rebounds, and Bailey Krewson handed out three assists.

After Neumann (14-10, 12-3 CSAC) took its largest lead of the first period with 3:10 to play, 15-8, Immaculata cut its deficit to one (15-14) in just under one minute. Veneziano, Larkin and Laws all had layups on back-to-back-to-back possession­s for the Mighty Macs. The Knights scored four points to end the period, and the hosts led 1814 at the end of the first quarter. The Mighty Macs were within one basket of the Knights during the first threeminut­es of the second period.

High School Ice Hockey

CONESTOGA7,GREATVALLE­Y 3>> Tomnmy Sopko recorded a hat trick as the Pioneers recorded the ICSHL victory. Sopko also had an assists. He scored twice in a fourgoal third period. Alex Lee added two goals and three assists.

Nolan Stkinson, Connor Iwanicki and Max Hucker scored for Conestoga. Casey Funkaddeda­pair of assists.
