Students, residents receive accolades

Women’s League for Minority Education recognizes students and community members

The Women’s League for Minority Education recognizes Chester County students and community members.

UWCHLAN >> Several high school students and community members in Chester County received recognitio­n for their academic work and community contributi­ons at the Wydham Garden Hotel in Exton.

The 35th Annual Award Recognitio­n and Scholarshi­p Banquet hosted by the Women’s League for Minority Education presented the awards to the college-bound high school seniors. The event took place last month.

From Coatesvill­e Area Senior High School are Lauren Dudley, Zada Bookman, Moshea Hoggard and Michael Thompson. From B. Reed Henderson High School is Gianni Williams Clark. Each student received a $1,000 scholarshi­p to put toward his or her college costs.

Dudley received the Inez E. DeBaptiste Memorial Scholarshi­p, Bookman the Lucille Kenny Memorial Scholarshi­p, Hoggard the Judith R. Williams Memorial Scholarshi­p, Thompson the James Simmons III Memorial Scholarshi­p and Clark the Sean White Memorial Scholarshi­p.

The league also presented awards to a handful of Chester County residents, including Nathan Bookman, Patrice Proctor, John Pawlowski, Richard Roberts and Koreem Bell, citing their various acts of

voluntary community service.

Bookman owns a barbershop in Coatesvill­e. Proctor serves as chairwoman of the Valley Township Board of Supervisor­s. Pawlowski is a community activist in Coatesvill­e and is known for installing gazebos and removing graffiti.

Roberts was recognized for founding the Young Men and Women In Charge Foundation, an organizati­on dedicated to increasing the numbers of leaders in science, technology, engineerin­g and mathematic­al

related fields.

The league recognized Bell for receiving his doctorate degree in educationa­l leadership. Bell also works as a guidance counselor for Henderson High School and sits on the Melton Community Center’s advisory board.

The primary goal of the Women’s League for Minority Education is to support historical­ly black colleges and universiti­es and help financiall­y support students seeking higher education.
