Lehigh Valley trips up Syracuse

ALLENTOWN >> Emmanuel Burriss hit a two-run single in the second inning, leading the Lehigh Valley IronPigs to an 8-5 win over the Syracuse Chiefs in the first game of a doublehead­er on Tuesday.

The single by Burriss came in the midst of a seven-run inning and gave the IronPigs a 4-3 lead. Later in the inning, Nick Williams hit a three-run double.

The IronPigs tacked on another run in the fifth when Cedric Hunter hit a solo home run.

Syracuse missed an additional scoring opportunit­y in the fifth, when Jason Martinson struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Hunter hit a pair of solo homers for Lehigh Valley.

Lehigh Valley starter Jake Thompson (10-5) picked up the win despite allowing five runs and seven hits over five innings. Opposing starter Taylor Hill (4-9) took the loss in the Internatio­nal League game after giving up seven runs and four hits over 1 1/3 innings. Luis Garcia recorded his fifth save of the season.

Mets 5, Fightin Phils 2

READING >> Colton Plaia hit a two-run home run and had three hits, driving in three, and Rainy Lara tossed five scoreless innings as the Binghamton Mets defeated the Reading Fightin Phils 5-2 on Tuesday.

Lara (6-7) picked up the win after he struck out four and walked three while allowing two hits.

Up 1-0 in the third, Binghamton added to its lead when Victor Cruzado hit a two-run home run.

The Fightin Phils cut into the deficit in the eighth inning when Jorge Alfaro and Dylan Cozens hit back-toback home runs.
