Jones rescues Avon Grove
The Avon Grove football team picked a perfect time to end a scoring drought in the rain.
Nate Jones scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to cap a rally as the Red Devils upended Octorara, 23-21, in a nonleague, Ches-Mont League crossover game.
The Red Devils (3-3) trailed, 12-0, in the third quarter before they got the break they desparately needed.
Octorara (1-5) tried a 26yard field, which was blocked. Josh Brockton picked up the loose ball, and rambled 72 yards to make it 12-7.
They took their first lead of the game early in the fourth, one play after recovering a fumble, Jones spun out of a tackle, and sprinted 61 yards for the scored and a 15-12 lead. The TD was the first for the Avon Grove offense in 15 quarters.
Avon Grove attempted to spring a surprise onside kick, that the Braves recovered. They turned it into an 11-play scoring drive. Trent Pawling finished it off on a one-yard plunge, his second TD of the night, to make it 19-15.
Back came the Red Devils. Jones again provided the big play with a 34-yard score to regain the lead with 4:51 left.
Octorara had one last chance, but Pawling was stopped on a 4th-and-2. Avon Grove ran the ball out of the end zone to concede a safety. On the ensuing kickoff, Octorara’s attempt for a miracle return failed, and Avon Grove escaped.
