Lincoln women pull off major upset

Fifth-seeded Lincoln University came back from a double-digit deficit to post a 73-71 upset win over topseeded Chowan University in the quarterfin­als of the CIAA Tournament on Wednesday.

Fifth-seeded Lincoln University came back from a double-digit deficit to post a 73-71 upset win over topseeded Chowan University in the quarterfin­als of the CIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C. on Wednesday afternoon.

Lincoln advances to take on Northern Division No. 3 seed Virginia State in the semifinals Friday at 1 p.m.

Lincoln’s She’cquan Bailey secured a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds on the afternoon to go along with five assists. Teira Pendleton had a game-high 20 points, while Kholby Oliver had 14. Lincoln shot 47.4 percent from the field, including 60 percent in the fourth quarter to improve to 9-19 on the year.

Chowan embarked on a 16-3 run to erase a 25-24 deficit. In the run, Danielle Weldon and Shaikeyla Jordan scored back-to-back baskets. Jordan Payne made four free throws along with three from Williams put CU up 38-25. Chowan would close the half on a Jordan Pettaway jumper. Lincoln’s McKenzie Spencer responded with a threepoint­er to end the quarter scoring with Chowan leading 40-28 at halftime.

In the fourth quarter, after falling down by eight (60-52) Lincoln mounted yet another comeback, chipping away at the Hawk lead and drew to within 63-61 as Bailey connected on a jumper while falling down. The Lions then trimmed it to 65-64 after a layup from Oliver, who was fouled on the play. Her free throw at 4:08 made it 65-64, and after a Chowan turnover, Lincoln took the 66-65 lead on a breakaway basket by Pendleton with 3:53 to play.

The teams traded baskets on each of their next possession­s and Lincoln’s De’jah Taylor connected on an 18-footer to surge the Lions ahead 70-67. Chowan cut into the lead on a Chantel Roberts jumper and regained the 71-70 lead on a Jada Lee steal and layup at the 1:13 mark.

Lincoln’s Bailey calmly took things into her own hands, driving and dropping in the go-ahead layup with 1:00 to play.

Taylor blocked Chowan’s shot attempt and Pendleton secured the rebound with 4.2 second to play. Lincoln led 73-71 after a free throw, Chowan had one last chance, but Jordan backrimmed a three-pointer at the Buzzer as the Lions celebrated the upset.

WEST CHESTER 74, MILLERSVIL­LE 68 >> Redshirt-freshman Rylee Power produced a career-high 25 points to lead short-handed West Chester to a PSAC East win. West Chester (10-15, 10-11 PSAC) jumped out in front early and never trailed as they snapped a five-game losing streak while earning a season sweep over Millersvil­le (9-17, 7-14). Power entered the having scored just 28 points on the season. However, the Golden Rams dressed just six players due to a combinatio­n of injuries and suspension­s.

Men’s Basketball

WEST CHESTER 80, MILLERSVIL­LE 75 >> West Chester completed a second half comeback by going on a 17-2 run to down host Millersvil­le. Jackson Hyland gave the Golden Rams the lead for good with 59 seconds left by hitting a pair of free throws. Afterwards, he grabbed a loose ball and knocked down two more to extend the lead to four. Hyland finished the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds to earn a double-double. Tyrell Long had a teamhigh 24 points with 11 rebounds. Zach Bare chipped in 21 points.
