WEGO Police Department to stage mock crash

- Staff Report

The Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department Traffic Safety Unit is hosting a mock car crash on Monday at 08:15 a.m. The event is being presented at Rustin High School located at 1100 Shiloh Road, in Westtown Township.

The mock crash is being sponsored by the Rustin High School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), the Westtown-East Goshen Police Association, and Rustin’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club.

The mock crashes are presented this time of year as a technique to educate students about the hazards of impaired and distracted driving immediately before prom season.

The purpose of the mock crash is to give junior age students a firsthand look at the potential tragedy that could result from impaired and distracted driving. The mock crash is presented in a way to offer as much realism as possible. The students are given firsthand experience of exactly what they could be responsible for including killing someone, possibly one of their friends, as well as being arrested for crimes as serious as homicide by vehicle and the possibility of going to state prison for up to five years.

In this particular instance, the crash will be between two vehicles that are occupied by six high school students, two of whom will die as a result of their injuries.

All of the victims of the crash are being portrayed by student actors from Rustin High School and the fictitious parents showing up at the scene are being played by three professional actors.
