Norman sets WCU long jump record
Justus Norman set a new school record while claiming the individual championship in the long jump while Colin Vannicolo won the decathlon to pace West Chester at the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Justus Norman set a new school record while claiming the individual championship in the long jump while Colin Vannicolo won the decathlon to pace West Chester’s men’s track & field squad on the second day of the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.
The rain and wet conditions were not enough to deter Norman from leaping 24 feet, 1.5 inches and hitting an NCAA provisional distance in the process. That was good enough for first place and 10 points for the Golden Rams. It didn’t stop Vannicolo from racking up 6,637 points in the decathlon to hit a NCAA provisional mark and claim the conference title.
West Chester is in sixth place with 21 points through eight events following action on Friday. Shippensburg leads the team field with 76 points while Slippery Rock is second with 51.5 points. Lock Haven sits third (37), Indiana (Pa.) fourth (34) and East Stroudsburg fifth (27).
Brady Thayer placed eighth in the decathlon with 5,557 points. Supporting Norman in the long jump, and finishing just outside of scoring positions, were D’Andrew Gursay and Joseph Adighibe, who placed ninth and 10th, respectively.
Women’s Track and Field
PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS >> Allison Lewis placed third in the 800-meters, while Caroline McLaughlin qualified for the 400 hurdles to lead the Golden Rams. McLaughlin qualified for the finals in the 400m hurdles while making a NCAA provisional time of 1:02.01. The Golden Rams’ 4x100m relay team won its heat and qualified second overall for the finals with a time of 47.53 seconds. That was .53 seconds shy of a NCAA provisional time. West Chester is currently ninth overall with 16 points. Shippensburg and Slippery Rock are tied for first with 54 points each. Bloomsburg is third with 47 points and Millersville is fourth with 30.5. California (Pa.) and Kutztown are tied for fifth with 20 points, and Seton Hill has 19 with Edinboro just ahead of West Chester with 16.5. Emily Dusellier placed fourth right behind Lewis in a time of 2:13.6 while Laura Slavich was seventh in 2:15.68.
