Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers recently opened up a branch on Wilmington Pike south of West Chester, offering fast food staples and frozen custard.

Originally opening its first branch in Broomall in 2012, the franchise business soon decided to expand to West Chester. The freestanding restaurant features seating for 100 patrons, and is open seven days a week. General Manager Kurt Herwig said business has been great since opening in April.

“We are excited to be here,” said Herwig. “We started with our first location in Broomall. We did so well there that we decided to start up more locations. This is our second location and as of now we are looking to put up three or four more in the area.”

Herwig noted what sets Freddy’s apart from other fastfood restaurants is that everything is made fresh, as each order is placed. He noted that along with offering gluten-free options on the menu, Freddy’s is best known for its popular steakburgers.

“We don’t have any warmers or anything like that. Nothing is ever started before you order it,” Herwig said.

“They are called steakburgers because they are 85/15 lean meat. We make them fresh. It’s fresh Kansas beef that comes

in. There are no additives, no preservatives. For our gluten-free menu, anything we make here, we can wrap in lettuce.”

Other popular options on the Freddy’s menu include grilled chicken sandwiches, black bean veggie burgers, and Chicago-style hot dogs.

Freddy’s custard is another main draw for customers, with a wide variety of sundae options and toppings.

Freddy’s prides itself on being a family-friendly environment, and it actively employs teenagers in the West Chester area.

“A lot of kids from the

community, it’s their first job,” Herwig said. “We love having kids come in so we can train them the ‘Freddy’s way’ and show them life experiences. It looks great on their resume. When they are 16 years old and moving up the ladder with us, they can become a shift leader or supervisor.

“We’re a little different from other companies because we like hiring brothers and sisters,” Herwig said. We just love the fact that everybody is a family here. We did that in Broomall and we’re going to do the same thing in West Chester.”

Herwig added that Freddie’s is also pet-friendly and gives out cups of vanilla custard to any dog going through the drive-through with their family.
