Ex-teacher admits sex assault on student, 16

MEDIA COURTHOUSE » A 28-yearold former teacher at a school for traumatized youth in Radnor was sentenced to three to 23 months this week after pleading guilty to institutional sexual assault for sexually abusing a 16-year-old student.

Nina Scott, of Downingtown, Chester County, will serve the minimum of her sentence on electronic home monitoring under the plea deal arranged by Deputy District Attorney Michael Galantino and defense attorney Evan Kelly.

Scott was a teacher at The Village in the Rosemont section of the township prior to her arrest in January on more than 70 counts, including 34 counts each of institutional sexual assault of a minor and corruption of minors.

She engaged in numerous sexual encounters with the female student at Scott’s home, at the school and in local parks between February and October 2016, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

An investigation began after what police described as “love letters” were found in the juvenile’s room at the facility, where Scott had been a teacher since October of 2015. Scott referred to the victim as “her girlfriend” in the letters and detailed some areas of their relationship.

Downingtown police became aware of the allegations and informed Radnor police. The two departments cooperated in arresting Scott at her home Jan. 31.

In addition to the electronic home monitoring, Scott was given five years of consecutive sex offender probation and ordered not to have any contact with the student. She will also undergo an evaluation by the state Sexual Offenders Assessment Board to determine whether she meets the criteria for a sexually violent predator, which may trigger another hearing.

Scott apologized to the victim and her family Monday, as well as her own family.

“This will never happen again,” she told Delaware County Court of Common Pleas Judge Richard Cappelli.
