Reading falls at Hartford

Jan Vazquez hit a grand slam in the first inning, leading the Hartford Yard Goats to a 9-6 win over the Reading Fightin Phils on Saturday.

The grand slam by Vazquez scored Omar Carrizales, Drew Weeks, and Correlle Prime to give the Yard Goats a 4-0 lead.

Following the big inning, the Fightin Phils cut into the deficit in the next half-inning when Zach Green hit a tworun home run.

The Yard Goats later added three runs in the second and two in the fourth. In the second, Weeks hit a three-run home run, while Carrizales hit a two-run home run in the fourth.

Hartford starter Parker French (8-11) picked up the win despite allowing five runs and seven hits over five innings. Opposing starter Tyler Viza (8-9) took the loss in the Eastern League game after a rough outing in which he allowed nine runs and eight hits over four innings. Shane Broyles retired the side in order for his 19th save of the season.

For the Fightin Phils, Green homered and doubled, driving home three runs.

Despite the loss, Reading is 6-3 against Hartford this season. runner on second to end the game for his third save of the season.

The single by Peter came in the midst of a four-run inning and gave the Knights a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Eddy Alvarez scored on a wild pitch.

Following the big inning, the IronPigs cut into the deficit in the seventh inning when Pullin hit a solo home run.

The Knights tacked on another run in the eighth when Rymer Liriano hit a solo home run.

Liriano homered and singled for Charlotte.

Jean Machi (3-0) got the win in relief while Lehigh Valley starter Brandon Leibrandt (4-3) took the loss in the Internatio­nal League game.

Charlotte improved to 5-1 against Lehigh Valley this season.
