East Goshen couple victimized by phone scam
Caller claimed to be collecting fine for failure to respond to a jury summons
An East Goshen resident called the Chester County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday after receiving a call from someone purporting to be a deputy sheriff collecting a fine for failure to respond to a jury summons. Any such call is bogus and should be reported to authorities immediately, the office stated in a social media post.
The couple came into the Sheriff’s Office after having second thoughts about their response to a similar call. Sadly, it was too late: They had already given the caller the numbers on $1,200 worth of money cards that were purchased at a local pharmacy.
A spokeswoman for the sheriff stated that employees at the store, who had been alerted previously to such scams, attempted to talk the couple out of buying the money cards, but that they insisted on doing so. After the scam was reported, officials at the Westtown-East Goshen Police Department were notified. No arrests have been made.
The sheriff’s office warned residents who may be vulnerable to such tactics that con artists are targeting the area again, mostly in developments with senior populations. To be sure, no fines are ever levied for missed jury service by county officials.
For more information of to report such activity call the sheriff’s office at 610344-6850 or your local police department.
