ATV driver flees police, injures officer

Police are seeking the public’s help in finding an ATV operator who fled from police and injured an officer.

Coatesvill­e police on Friday said that officers observed dirt bikes and ATVs operators riding illegally through North Ninth Avenue and East Chestnut Street at about 6:45 p.m. on Thursday. The ATV operator made a U-turn in front of a police vehicle and hit the curb, causing them to come to a complete stop. The officer attempted to grab the operator to stop them from fleeing and police said that is when the officer was dragged about 100 yards. The unidentifi­ed officer was transporte­d to Brandywine Hospital and treated for his non-lifethreat­ening injuries.

City detectives said the operator was wearing a red helmet and what appears to be some type of riding shirt that is red and white in color and light color pants. He was also wearing a darkcolore­d backpack. The ATV is a dark color and the make and model are unknown.

Police said the ATV was last seen eluding police through the woods in the area of South 11th Avenue and Oak Street.
