Dominic E. ‘Coogs’ Castaldi of Downingtown
Dominic E. “Coogs” Castaldi, 88, of Downingtown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at his home.
He was the beloved husband of Joan (nee Wiggins) Castaldi, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Downingtown, Dominic was the youngest son of Michele and Rosario (nee Cimorelli) Castaldi and attended Downingtown High School where he played football.
He proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he served in Germany for three years for the occupation forces. He also continued to play football and was a member of the Rangers team that won the European championship in 1950.
Upon returning home, Coogs began his career with the Downingtown Paper Co., now Sunoco Products, and retired in 1991 after 39 years as a truck driver.
Mr. Castaldi was a Democratic Committee person for the East Downingtown precinct and served three terms as Constable for East Downingtown.
Coogs was a life member of St. Joseph Church in Downingtown, where he was active in the Prime Timers. He was also a life member of St. Anthony’s Lodge and their Amphibious Order of Frogs as well as the VFW Post 845 in Downingtown.
He enjoyed playing golf in his younger days, playing cards at the senior center, gardening and going to the casino.
In addition to this wife, Coogs is survived by his five children, Dominic, Jr. ”Nick” (Cindy), David (Sherry), Daniel (Joyce), Douglas, and Teresa Di Sante (Tom); six grandchildren, Sophia Govorov (Andrei), Duane, Michael (Marjorie), Geanine, Anthony and Danielle Castaldi; and three great grandchildren, Alexander and Marie Govorov and Alyna Castaldi.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Michael, Constantino, and Anthony Castaldi; and sisters, Mary Colella and Florence Mascherino.
A morning visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 am on Friday, April 27th at St. Joseph Church, 338 Manor Ave., Downingtown, followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am.
Interment will be private.
