Unionville boys win state team title
Indians top Great Valley in final; Shanahan boys cruise into lax semis
It was a busy day at Hershey Racquet Club for the ChesMont League.
And in the end, the PIAA gold and silver medals are coming back to Chester County.
Unionville beat Great Valley, 3-0, in the championship match to bring home the PIAA Class 3A Team Tennis Championship Saturday afternoon. In the morning session, Unionville beat Council Rock North, 3-1, and Great Valley beat Lower Merion, 3-2, to set up the title showdown.
In the final, Ethan Bradley topped Sam Kesti at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-1, and Victor Li beat Nikhil Gangoli, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.
The first singles match between Unionville’s Tristan Bradley and Great Valley’s Sameer Gangoli went to three sets before being abandoned.
Unionville picked up a point at No. 2 doubles as Clay Horowitz and Ethan Fitzsimons won 6-0, 6-3.
“The boys know each other well and it was a really well-played match with great sportsmanship,” said Unionville coach Sharon Largent.
In the semifinals, Unionville’s Bradley brothers both won, while Horowitz and Fitzsimons picked up the third point to beat Council Rock North.
In the other semifinal, Sameer Gangoli, Kesti and Nikhil Gangoli swept the singles to upend Lower Merion.
Boys Lacrosse
BISHOP SHANAHAN 11, MARPLE NEWTOWN 3 » Kyle Gucwa and Kyle Pollick had three goals each as Bishop Shanahan advanced to the District 1 Class 2A semifinals with an easy win over the Tigers, the 450th career victory for Shanahan coach Jon Heisman.
Gabe Goforth had two goals while Connor Heisman, Bryan Rafferty and Mike Tagliaferri each had one goal for Shanahan.
Goalie Nic Pezone had eight saves in the win for Shanahan.
The top-seeded Eagles will host No. 4 Strath Haven in Tuesday’s semifinal, needing a win to reach the final and also lock up a state tournament berth.
