Police officer assaulted by prisoner

A Coatesvill­e police officer was assaulted by a prisoner at the Coatesvill­e Police Station Saturday morning.

COATESVILL­E » A Coatesvill­e police officer was assaulted by a prisoner at the Coatesvill­e Police Station early Saturday morning, police said.

On May 19 at 4:53 a.m., Coatesvill­e Police were housing Henry Carkhuff, 22 of Phoenixvil­le, who was brought in by West Chester Police for public drunkennes­s. Carkhuff was highly intoxicate­d and found to have diabetes during the intake process. After about two hours, officers became worried that Carkhuff needed medical attention so EMS was called to Coatesvill­e Police Station.

While being checked in the cell, the prisoner, Carkhuff, became aggressive toward a police officer and a member of the EMS. Carkhuff then struck a police officer in the face. Other officers rushed in and came into the cell block and were able to get all personnel out of the cell without further incident. Carkhuff was charged with aggravated assault, assault by prisoner and other related charges.

rant on Stercik. Following a police search, he was found to have a glass smoking bowl with suspected marijuana residue, five-and-ahalf Adderall pills in a plastic wrapper and three-anda-half Suboxone pills in a plastic wrapper.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT » On May 21 at 3:36 a.m., Coatesvill­e police arrested Derran Smith, 39, for misdemeano­r disorderly conduct, after the defendant entered the police station demanding to file a complaint. Smith was given the paperwork to file the compliant, and proceeded to cause a disturbanc­e in the lobby by yelling at the police receptioni­st, and officers. Smith was given several warnings to stop. After several warnings over the course of 30 minutes, Smith was placed under arrest after failing to comply. HIT AND RUN » On Sunday May 20, at 2 a.m., officers responded to a hit-and-run automobile accident in the 100 block of south Sixth Avenue. The victim, Ashanti Warren, 35, stated that she heard a loud crashing noise to later find out that an unknown vehicle struck her car that was parked on the west side of south Sixth Avenue. The striking vehicle then fled the scene, heading south on south Sixth Avenue toward Oak Street. Warren’s vehicle suffered considerab­le damage to the passenger side front wheel and wheel well.

DUI » Sean Maichle, 29, of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware was arrested and charged with DUI (Controlled Substances) and related traffic offenses, as well as with violations of the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetic Act and Tampering with or Fabricatin­g Physical Evidence, after the 1990 Oldsmobile he was operating was stopped for erratic driving. The incident occurred on April 6 at 4:09 p.m., in the 900 block of Newark Road, in New Garden. Upon making contact with Maichle, police observed indicators suggesting impairment. DRUG CHARGES » Lukas B. Mellott, 25, of Peach Bottom was arrested and charged with violations of the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetic Act (Act 64) and with a traffic offense, after the 2002 Buick he was driving was stopped for non-functionin­g rear lights. The incident occurred on April 9 at 10:35 p.m., in the 8900 block of Gap Newport Pike, New Garden. Upon making contact with Mellott, police detected the odor of marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle. Mellott denied that there was any contraband in the vehicle but gave police permission to search the car. DRUG CHARGES » John P. Dawyot Jr., 26, of Landenberg was arrested and charged with violations of the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetic Act and with a traffic offense, after the 2015 Jeep he was driving was stopped for a stop sign violation. The incident occurred on April 10 at 9:51 p.m., at the intersecti­on of Newark Road and Laurel Heights Road, in New Garden. Upon making contact with Dawyot, police detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. A small amount of marijuana and related parapherna­lia was seized. TERRORISTI­C THREATS » James Hannum, 52, of West Grove was arrested and charged with terroristi­c threats, recklessly endangerin­g another person, simple assault, and disorderly conduct, after he allegedly threatened another male with a shotgun. The incident occurred on April 12 at 7:15 p.m., in the 100 block of Prospect Avenue, in West Grove. Hannum apparently heard the male arguing with a female on the phone, as he walked past Hannum’s house and words were exchanged between the men. The victim walked home but returned and confronted Hannum about what was said. DUI » Alfredo Lara, 31 of Newark, Delaware was arrested and charged with DUI and related traffic offenses, after the 1999 Ford he was driving was stopped for erratic driving, including leaving its lane of travel on multiple occasions, driving onto the concrete median strip, and nearly colliding with a stopped vehicle. The incident occurred on April 14 at 8:22 p.m., in the 9000 block of Gap Newport Pike, in New Garden. Upon making contact with Lara, police observed indicators suggesting intoxicati­on and field sobriety tests confirmed impairment. DUI » Raymundo MartinezRa­mirez, 34, of Avondale was arrested and charged with DUI and related traffic offenses, after the 2004 Mini Cooper he was driving was stopped for moving and equipment violations. The incident occurred on April 14 at 11:54 p.m., in the 1600 block of Baltimore Pike, in New Garden. Upon making contact with Martinez-Ramirez, police observed numerous indicators suggesting intoxicati­on and field sobriety tests confirmed impairment. He was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and submitted to a chemical test of his breath, resulting in a B.A.C. of .147 percent.
