Dangerous heat starts to bake the region today

Think Saturday was hot? You ain’t seen nothing yet.

Things started to steam up yesterday but a cloak of heavy, humid air will join the festivitie­s Sunday as we’re heading into an absolute summer cauldron that will put us in the grips of a heat wave right through the July 4 holiday.

We’ll top out in the 90s every day for the next week - but Sunday and Monday promise to be the worst of it, with temperatur­es soaring close to triple digits and “real-feel” temps well over 100 degrees.

The first heat wave of summer will bring a cloak of hot, humid weather that will sit on the region for the better part of the week.

If you have things to do outside like cutting the grass or exercising, try to do it early today before the sun starts to bake the region.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning with heat index values as high as 107 degrees on Sunday and Monday. The warning will be in effect 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 p.m. Monday.

The heat index - what the temperatur­e actually feels like on your skin when you combine humidity with the air temperatur­e - will soar over 100 degrees Sunday and could go as high as 107 Monday.

In other words, it’s going to be sticky, or if you prefer hot as a firecracke­r as we head for the July 4 Independen­ce Day holiday.
