Biden tribute brings out the brass
National Museum of American Jewish History holds 2018 Only in America Gala
There’s a “tell all” story to be told for those interested in a part of Philadelphia’s history that doesn’t get as much notice as the American Revolution did but is noteworthy as well.
It began in the mid-1600s with a migration from Europe that gave Jewish people a new look at not only their religious understandings but lifestyle opportunities as well. Philly’s attitude toward spirituality made it a good place to settle for Jewish people, allowing them to preserve the founding precepts of their religion without as much worry.
One of things that’s ensued from that understanding is the erection of the National Museum of American Jewish History (NMAJH), located in the heart of the historic area on South Independence Mall. Many folks might be surprised by all the education programs, exhibits, camp opportunities and seminars that are now available to adults visiting the facility.
The museum’s structure, divided into segments, begins on the fourth level as the story of the trials and tribulations of the Jewish diaspora unfolds over a period of more than 360 years, culminating in the Only in America Gallery/Hall of Fame. The museum highlights what it was like to become an immigrant in Philly during certain periods of time and why it was challenging for many.
In addition to the permanent collections, a special exhibit now on display titled “Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music” is a tribute to the musician’s 100th birthday that’s running through Sept. 2. Not able to attend during those dates? Opt for “The Art of Rube Goldberg” instead with tickets available from Oct. 12 thru Jan. 21, 2019.
The museum recently celebrated its eighth anniversary at the 2018 Only in America Gala. Former Vice President Joe Biden served as the keynote speaker for the celebratory event.
