High or low grass: First Tee of Greater Trenton offers free three-week instruction at Cadwalader Park

Let’s talk golf balls. The United States Golf Association specifies that a golf ball must weigh no more than 1.620 ounces (45.93g), be spherical in shape and be no less than 1.68-inches in diameter. This is called “The American Ball”. The “British Ball” is a version smaller at 1.62-inches.

Since this article posts in New Jersey, one of 50 states, this conversation discusses the “American ball”.

An ongoing difference of opinion with city officials involves the height grass is cut on athletic fields, particularly “The Gully” area in Cadwalader Park where The First Tee of Greater Trenton begins a three-week fall introduction golf program for area youth.

On September 15, 22 and 29, local youth can receive basic instructions for golf as well as listen to adults give insights about life lessons and nine core values The First Tee supports including honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment.

The First Tee of Greater Trenton Board President Jeff Hughes called the come back, “a return to our roots with a focus on attracting City of Trenton children and teaching them golf and life lessons.”

Personal support believes The First Tee should add “punctuality” to their list as being on time, by the way, this three-week instructional run from 1012 noon, matters for education, employment and many aspects of life.

Also, commitment matters in almost every life success. Getting up to make one’s life shine requires the promise of commitment.

Moving on, golfers will use a field where grass gets cut to three inches in height. You see the problem, right?

Ball size: 1.68 inches in diameter. Grass height: 3 inches in height. Yep. Balls will disappear which makes finding them difficult.

Now, let’s talk about “shagging”, umm, the American term which in golf means to collect balls, generally with a shag bag.

Of course, the British “shag” term incorporated by super spy Austin Powers, could deliver a pregnancy if no protection accompanied that love fest.

That’s a life lesson. Right? Don’t derail your dreams with a pregnancy.

After all The First Tee of Greater Trenton golfers complete practice, they or instructors must shag balls.

A request here hoped that The City would mow grass in to a height of 1-2 inches which would make for easy ball collection in The First Tee practice area.

People who support The First Tee asked for this simple allowance, dispatched yours truly as an intermediary, even offered to cut this area with their own hands or hire a lawn maintenance company but a mayor’s aid harrumphed, “No way, L.A., they’re not going to let you do that.”

The City said, “Shag you.” (British version). Mind you, this compensation would take an hour.

No worries. The First Tee core value of “perseverance” applies here.

So, this invitation for golf instruction extends to all local youth with an emphasis on City of Trenton kids. Come out to Stuyvesant Ave. and try something new or improve your golf skills.

Hughes has convinced me to volunteer which means a personal attendance from 9:30-11 a.m.

Parents are more than welcome to attend for discussion about important issues they may need help with. Let’s start a city revolution that includes conversation and action.

The golf program is free. The three-week class includes free healthy snacks and other refreshments. Be on time. For information contact ROBERTC.FIRSTTEEGREATERTRENTON@GMAIL.COM or call 800-322-4352. Or access www.thefirstteegreatertrenton.org.
