Shanahan, D’town West reach semis

Bishop Shanahan’s Cara Shultz goes for a kill Saturday against Rustin. Shultz and top-seeded Shanahan beat West Chester Rustin Saturday in the District 1 Class 4A quarterfin­als, 25-13, 25-16, 25-13. The Eagles will meet 12th-seeded Downingtow­n West in Tuesday’s semifinals, after the Whippets upset archrival Downingtow­n East, 25-16, 25-23, 25-27, 25-12. West also secured a state berth, while East enters the playback round against Rustin on Tuesday.

The Downingtow­n West girls’ volleyball team secured a bid in States with a 3-1 victory over Downingtow­n East in the PIAA District 1 4A quarterfin­als Saturday; posting scores of 25-16, 25-23, 25-27 and 25-12. West was led by Aly Reardon with 16 kills, three aces and 10 digs, and received plenty of support from Audrey Jones (17 kills, three aces); Hailey Lewis (12 kills, four aces, three blocks); Jenna Schuda (34 assists, six kills, three aces); and Lea Filidore (20 digs, three aces). For East, Jess Angeline had 28 assists, Victoria Rudolph eight kills and Jill Curran seven kills and eight digs. Downingtow­n West will play at Bishop Shanahan in the District 1 4A semifinals Tuesday at 7 p.m.

CONESTOGA 3, PENNSBURY 1 » The Pioneers (17-1-2) ran out to a three-goal lead early in the first half with two finishes by Emily Wertz and one by Sydney Sloan in this PIAA District 1 4A quarterfin­al. Wertz was found open on the far side on both occasions, off a switch, and was able to slot home for easy finishes. Outside back Sydney Sloan’s goal curled into the corner of the far-post off of a shot from the corner of the 18 yard box following a run from her left back position. Assists were contribute­d by Caitlin Donovan, who found Wertz after a driving run and cross down the wing by Nia Scott; while Jane Bailey, and Kristi Dirico also created opportunit­ies for for Wertz and Sloan’s goals. Sarah Nselel made four saves for No. 2 seed Conestoga, who will host No. 3 seed Pennridge in the District 1 semifinals.

UNIONVILLE 1, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 0

» Tommy Kelly had the game’s only goal, with 17:19 left in the first half, as the ninth-seeded Indians advanced to the District 1 Class 4A semifinals, and locked up a state playoff berth. Unionville will travel to No. 4 Abington on Tuesday for the semifinals. On Saturday, the defensive back four guided the Indians to another shutout, led by the efforts of Garrett Pinkston and Matt Adams. Goalie Alex Dolce had six saves for Unionville.

WEST CHESTER 1, SETON HILL 1 » In search of a win to secure its secondcons­ecutive PSAC regular season title, the Golden Rams (11-2-4, 7-1-4 PSAC) tied a host Seton Hill team in need of a win in order to qualify for the PSAC Tournament. West Chester, which had an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal, got an early score from Daniel Grindrod. WCU goalie Will Marshall had one save. GOLDEN RAMS TOP SEED IN PSAC CHAMPIONSH­IP » Saturday evening, at the end of the regular season, West Chester claimed the No. 1 seed in the PSAC Championsh­ip, received a first-round bye, and will play host to the semifinals (Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.) and the final (Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.) West CHester will be led by Doug Goitia and Jason Pixley. Both have turned in a pair of match-winning goals. Pixley sits eighth in the PSAC with seven goals. Goalkeeper Will Marshall paces the league in goals-against-average (.680).

Women’s Field Hockey

WEST CHESTER 3, MANSFIELD 0 » Katie Thompson scored twice, and Lindsay Engle added a goal, as the top-ranked Rams (13-2, 7-1 PSAC) maintained pace with an idle East Stroudsbur­g to set up a showdown at Vonnie Gros Field on Halloween for first place. WCU goalkeeper Marissa Elizardo recorded eight saves for her sixth shutout of the year. With the win, the Rams clinched a postseason bid.

College Football

BOWIE STATE 35, LINCOLN 14 » The Lions (1-8, 1-4 CIAA) jumped out to an early 14-0 lead before the Bulldogs (7-2, 4-1 CIAA) came back to earn the win. Dominique Rogers scored the Lions’ first touchdown on a 50-yard intercepti­on return in the first quarter. Late in the second, Keenan Reid blocked a Bowie punt and Andre Williams receoverd it in the end zone for a 14-0 lead. Bowie answered with 15 points in the final four minutes of the second quarter to lead 15-14 at the half.
