Democrat concedes tight state Senate race in Philly suburb

HARRISBURG, PA. >> The Democrat in a suburban Philadelph­ia state Senate contest is conceding in a race where she says she trails the six-term Republican incumbent by 74 votes.

Democrat Tina Davis said in a statement Tuesday that she’s ending her campaign against Republican Sen. Robert Tomlinson.

Davis made the announceme­nt a day after a judge rejected her lawsuit to order Bucks County officials to count more than 200 absentee ballots received after the legal deadline of Nov. 2.

With Tomlinson’s victory, Republican­s would maintain a 29-21 majority in Pennsylvan­ia’s Senate after losing five seats in the Nov. 6 election.

Chiropract­or faces charges he sexually assaulted woman

SCRANTON, PA. >> A chiropract­or has been charged with sexually abusing a woman at his practice outside Scranton.

John William Stevens was arraigned Monday on charges including involuntar­y deviate sexual intercours­e. The alleged incident occurred in March at Stevens’ office in South Abington Township.

Prosecutor­s allege the 51-year-old Stevens forced the woman to perform oral sex during a massage session.

Stevens’ attorney tells The Times-Tribune that the alleged victim and Stevens knew each other socially and had exchanged potentiall­y suggestive texts.

He says the sexual activity was consensual.

Stevens was released on $50,000 bail and is scheduled for a court hearing next week.

Cops: Man shot woman, daughter over worries they were spying

PITTSBURGH >> Police say a man shot a woman and her 16-year-old daughter who were his neighbors in Pennsylvan­ia because he believed they were spying on him.

Authoritie­s responded to the scene in Harrison Township around 9 p.m. Monday and found the mother and daughter outside suffering from gunshot wounds.

A SWAT team was called to the scene after the alleged shooter barricaded himself inside a nearby housing complex. He was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 11:40 p.m.

The Tribune-Review reports the mother has been hospitaliz­ed in critical condition, and the 16-yearold girl remains hospitaliz­ed in stable condition.

Police say the alleged shooter had been suffering from an unspecifie­d mental illness for several years. It is unclear how he got access to firearms.

An investigat­ion into the shooting is ongoing.
