Jason Pixley gave West Chester reason to dream of a national title when he scored in the 25th minute of Saturday’s championship game in Pittsburgh.

Less than two hours later, the Rams were left wondering what might have been.

Pixley’s goal gave West Chester an early lead against Barry (Fl.), on Saturday, but that lead slipped away in the second half in a 2-1 loss at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh.

“I could not be prouder of my guys as they played well and played so hard all-day but sometimes in sports, it is just not your day,” said West Chester coach Michael Benn. “This senior class has done so many great things for this program including getting this program to a spot where the university and our alumni can be extremely proud of it. It is always tough to finish a season although I think we can certainly leave with our heads held high.”

Pixley’s ninth goal of the season held up until halftime, but the Barry pressure in the second half was too much to handle.

James Kirkham and Stephen Kosmala scored the goals for Barry in the second half to give the Florida school its first national title.

Pixley was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Andrew Slater and Great Valley grad Kyle Hoops.

“This group is so willing to work hard every day and sacrifice individual glory in order to promote the success of the overall group,” Benn said. “Winning an Atlantic Region championship and defeating the defending national champion (Charleston) was a big step for us ... I have to give all credit for this accomplishment to our players and how they performed with our seniors serving as a driving force.”
