D.A.: Man sexually assaulted 2 young girls
Boyertown man was alone with kids at Amity residence
A Boyertown man has been charged after police say he sexually assaulted two young girls.
John M. Hammes, 57, of Farmington Avenue in Boyertown, has been charged following an investigation into an alleged assault against two young girls that took place in 2018.
On Friday, Aug. 17, 2018, the Berks County Detective’s Office received a Childline Referral from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Human Services, relative to two young girls who were sexually assaulted at their babysitter’s residence.
The investigation was assigned to the Berks County Detective’s Office.
The criminal investigation found that the two female victims were approximately 4 and 6 years old when the sexual assaults occurred between January and July 2018, according to court documents.
The two victims were cared for by their babysitter at a residence located in Amity Township between January and July 2018.
Hammes was often at the babysitter’s residence and would have direct contact with the two victims, authorities said.
During this time, there were periods when Hammes was alone with the children and isolated each victim.
Both victims were interviewed at the Children’s Alliance Center. During the forensic interviews, both victims disclosed and described the sexual acts that took place in 2018 at their babysitter’s residence, according to police.
On Wednesday, Jan. 2, the Berks County Detective’s Office filed criminal charges at District Judge Steven Chieffo’s office and an arrest warrant was issued for Hammes.
On Friday, Jan. 4, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Hammes surrendered to the Berks County Detectives at their office in Reading. Subsequently, he was taken to the
Berks County Sheriffs Central Processing Department for processing.
Hammes is being charged with involuntary deviant sexual intercourse, indecent assault,
indecent exposure, endangering the welfare of children and corruption of minors. He is currently awaiting preliminary arraignment.
