Local seniors sculpt clay bowls to fight hunger

KENNETT SQUARE >> Local seniors from Brandywine Living at Longwood are excited to be using their artistic talent to help fight hunger in their community by supporting the Eighth annual Kennett Square Empty Bowls Project.

The Kennett Square Empty Bowls Project is a yearly fundraising event hosted by the KACS (Kennett Area Community Service) to assist the growing number of families that need support in the community. Attendees are served a simple meal of soup and salad while learning about the wonderful services that the KACS provides to local families. At the end, they receive a handmade bowl to serve as a reminder of local families in need.

Although, the project won’t take place until Thursday, Feb. 28 2019, the seniors have been busy crafting their bowls since October.

Kristen Aran, Escapades Producer of Brandywine Living at Longwood, who organized the residents’ participation, commented, “We were excited to be a part of the Empty Bowls Project this year. The residents wanted to give something back to the community, especially for a cause that helps the community in a big way.”

Residents worked in unison on their handmade bowls during organized art sessions. They learned how to create the clay bowls under the guidance of Megan Minella, Artist and Teacher. The bowls were finished with decorative textures and painted with each resident’s color choice for an extra creative touch.

“It makes us feel really good that we can use our talent to help provide food for others in the community,” said Lin Ziering, Brandywine Living at Longwood resident.

For the final step in the process, the bowls will be traveling to Quarryville, to be kiln fired before being delivered to the Kennett Square Empty Bowls Project.
