D-East’s Smuda scores 1,000th point
Downingtown East’s 6-foot-5 junior Bella Smuda scored her 1,000th career point early in the second quarter of the Cougars’ 45-40 win against Coatesville Wednesday evening. Smuda’s shot, a baseline jumper from the left side, put the Cougars ahead 22-13, and she finished with 23 points.
“I think scoring 1,000 points is one of the coolest accomplishments in high school sports, and one of the most elusive,” said Downingtown East girls basketball head coach Tom Schurtz. “Winning an individual state title is exciting, but that only represents one year of work. Scoring 1,000 points reflects not only individual accomplishment over a long period of time, but also is a reflection of the success of the team - they helped to make it possible.
“Bella is a joy to coach and has been a model teammate on and off the court.”
