Roundup: Rustin boys vault into Final Four; D-East outlasts D-West in double OT

The Ches-Mont boys’ basketball tournament Final Four will compete in the semifinals Saturday at Oxford High School as follows: Unionville (American Division No. 1 seed) vs. West Chester East (No. 2 seed in National Division), and Coatesvill­e (No. 1 seed in National Division) vs. West Chester Rustin (No. 2 seed in the American Division). Rustin defeated Kennett, 60-44, Thursday to clinch a share of the American Division title.

Boys Basketball

DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 64, DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 57 >> The Cougars (13-9, 7-5) prevailed in double overtime, led by Tariq Kalim (22 points, including two dunks in the second overtime period), Andrew King (20 points, including seven points in the second overtime period) and Andres Mujica (11 points). D-East, which has won three games in three days to secure a spot in Districts, led 34-24 going into the foruth quarter, but West’s Will Howard (21 points) hit a trey with 20 seconds left in regulation to tie the game. The Whippets’ Cam McCole (11 points) hit a layup with three seconds left to tie the game at the end of the first overtime period.

GREAT VALLEY 62, OXFORD 33 >> The Patriots (13-9, 5-5) won their seventh game in the last eight contests, led by Gavin Frankenhei­mer, who scored 18 points, including four treys in the first quarter. The Patriots, who have won their last five league games, scored 26 points in the first quarter. Christian McCartney had 15 points for Oxford.

Girls Basketball

BISHOP SHANAHAN 49, WEST CHESTER

HENDERSON 40 >> The Eagles bounced back from a 22-12 halftime deficit, outscoring the Warriors 22-9 in the final period. Shanahan was led by Sammy McCarter (15 points), Kim Harlan (11 second-half points), Maggie Grant (nine points) and Giana DiMarco (nine points). For Henderson, Grace Ferguson and Molly Manion combined for 34 points. DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 47, DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 27 >> The visiting Cougars got 20 points from Bella Smuda and 11 points from Lauren Kent. D-East jumped out to a 12-2 first quarter lead, then outscored the Whippets 16-4 in the third quarter.

UNIONVILLE 52, SUN VALLEY 38 >> The Indians, who were led by Erin Towler (11 points) and Lyndsey Barrett (nine points), outscored the Vanguards 17-6 in the third quarter.

COATESVILL­E 53, AVON GROVE 50 >> The Red Raiders closed out their regular season with a win, led by Sarah Huston (25 points, including a 14-for-15 performanc­e from the free throw line). Also for Coatesvill­e, Kiana Brown added nine points and Dasani Peoples chipped in eight, including two free throws with seven seconds left to seal the win for the Raiders. Amanda Smida led Avon Grove with 14 points. PERKIOMEN 30, COLLEGIUM CHARTER 22>> Collegium led 15-10 at halftime, but was outscored by Perkiomen 15-4 in the third quarter. Cheyenne Rivas led Collegium with nine points.

WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 52, GREAT VALLEY 15 >> The visiting Golden Knights got pins from Matt Griffith (160 pounds), Chris Hatzipavli­des (170) and Charlie Baldesari (132), and techincal falls from Jimmy King (113) and Josh Viarengo (126). The Patriots got a 47-second pin from 195-pounder Ethan Seeley and a 40-second fall from 152-pounder Jack Semar.
