Cougars top Wissahicko­n in boys’ lacrosse district opener

The Downingtow­n East High School boys’ lacrosse team, seeded No. 24 in PIAA District 1 Class 3A, defeated No. 9 seed Wissahicko­n, 11-4, in the first round of the District 1 3A tournament Tuesday. The Cougars’ Nick Ericson won 15 of 17 faceoffs, and D-East goalie Nico Iacovino recorded 18 saves. Nine different Cougars each scored at least one goal, led by Brian Miller (two goals, two assists) and Dylan Kilroy (two goals). Jack Riley, Grady Meredith and Luke Wetzel each tallied one goal and dished out two assists. Josh Lee, Mike Ostertag, Jared Kolinsky and Zach Hamilton scored the other Downingtow­n East goals.

Girls’ Lacrosse

WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 16, HATBORO HORSHAM 10 >> In the first round of the PIAA 3A District 1 playoffs, the Golden Knights held an 8-7 halftime lead and pulled away for victory. Ava Kane scored five goals, Ashley Chisholm tallied four and Grace Piona had a hat trick. VILLA MARIA 19, VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 4 >> Bridget Finley, Hannah Young and Margie Carden all scored a hat trick for the Hurricanes (18-1) in the first round of the PIAA 2A District 1 playoffs, and both Finley and Abby Walheim dished out three assists. BISHOP SHANAHAN 15, STRATH HAVEN 7 >> The Eagles were led by Jess Holowsko (four goals), Gianna DeCesaris (three goals), Monica Manley (two goals, two assists, five draw controls) and goalie Jess Gorr (12 saves) in this PIAA District 1 2A playoff opener. UNIONVILLE 16, WISSAHICKO­N 10 >> In the PIAA Class 3A District 1 opener, The Indians’ Mina Scott led the way with seven goals. Shannon Garvey and Riley Glackin each had a hat trick for Unionville, and goalie Megan Kirk recorded seven saves.

UNIONVILLE 5, CEDAR CREST 0>> The Indians won the opening round of the PIAA 3A team championsh­ips, getting five straight set wins, including first singles (Tristan Bradley), second singles (Ethan Bradley), third singles (Victor Li), first doubles (Clay Horowitz and Andrew Poprik) and second doubles (Kevin Liao and Parik Radhakrish­nan). The Indians advance to the second round of team States, to be played Friday at Hershey Racquet Club. GREAT VALLEY 5, LASALLE COLLEGE 0 >> The Patriots won all five matches in straight sets in the opening round of the PIAA 3A team championsh­ips, including first singles (Sameer Gangoli), second singles (Ryan Hamel), third singles (Amish Saini), first doubles (Marc Lucifer and Warrick Parvess) and second doubles (Steve Coehlo and Adit Awatramani). CONESTOGA 4, LIBERTY 0 >> The Pioneers won the opening round of the PIAA 3A team championsh­ips, getting straight set wins at second singles (Peter Auslander), third singles (Jack Ginter), first doubles (Sam Weintraub and Henry Danon) and second doubles (Stephen Le and Andy Mei).

COATESVILL­E 5, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 0 >> Red Raider pitcher Cam Trego pitched a four-hit shutout, while the Coatesvill­e attack was led by RJ Rickabaugh (2-for-3, two RBIs), Trey Tobinus (2-for-3 with a double) and Ryan Weaver (two RBIs). WEST CHESTER EAST 2, UNIONVILLE 1 >> The Vikings, trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh, rallied for two runs and the victory. Grant Shorey had two hits (including a double) and an RBI for East, and teammate Jake Lutz had two hits (including a double) and scored a run. Winning pitcher Pat McFarland hurled a five-hitter, which included 16 firstpitch strikes.

Softball

WEST CHESTER EAST UNIONVILLE 0 >> Viking pitcher Sam Gomez threw a no-hitter in this five-inning contest, walking one batter and striking out nine. The Vikings’ offense was led by Paige Olson (2-for-3, three RBIs), Kate Douglass (double, two RBIs), Kayla MacLaughli­n (home run, two runs scored) and Kelsey McLaughlin (double, two runs scored). COATESVILL­E 17, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 4 >> The Red Raiders cranked out 19 hits in this five-inning contest. Natalie Florschutz gained the win in the circle and went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI’s. Kayla Bock had three hits, including her ninth and 10th home runs of the year, and drove in five runs. Payton Landis added three hits, including two doubles. Sam Emerson and Nicole Wuertz (three RBI’s) each contribute­d two hits. For Henderson, Megan Schmotzer hit a two-run home run.
