Birds’ secondary in midseason injury form

PHILADELPHIA >> With Cre’Von LeBlanc sidelined, Ronald Darby rehabbing from a torn ACL and Jalen Mills on PUP with a mysterious foot injury, the Eagles worked out a veteran cornerback Saturday.

Orlando Scandrick, 32, who spent nine of his 10 seasons with the Cowboys, got a chance to show the Eagles how much tread he has left on his tires, per the NFL Network.

The shortage of seasoned help is acute. Scandrick might be able to help even if he is approaching senior citizen status in the league.

On Friday the Eagles signed undrafted rookie Alex Brown, who practiced Saturday.

The defensive backs in camp have been less than inspiring. That was especially evident Saturday, the first day of practice in shoulder pads. If the quarterbacks hadn’t missed so many open receivers the carnage would have been reminiscent of the Birds’ first loss last season to the Saints.

There were some big plays though, including a leaping, acrobatic interception by Sydney Jones, who was in recovery mode after getting beat deep by Mack Hollins. Nate Sudfeld gets an assist as he put too much air into the throw.

“It was a run fake and the receiver downblocked,” Jones said. “I thought he was going to block Malcolm (Jenkins). So that’s my key to shoot for the run. But it was a fake so I noticed it like a second late. (Hollins) got down field and I’m chasing him, and I didn’t panic, I stayed calm, turned my head, saw the ball and used my ball skills from there. Find the ball, that’s one of the main concerns in our DB room. Find the ball, keep that ingrained in your head when it comes practice time, and game time you just do it.”

Jones played very little his first season as he was coming off a torn Achilles’ tendon. Healthy now, the Eagles are counting on Jones to be one of their top four corners. Right now, he’s their second-best corner, behind only Avonte Maddox.

LeBlanc was negotiating the locker room Saturday on a roll-about with a boot on his foot. He was a solid contributor after joining the Eagles as a stopgap pickup during an injury epidemic last season.

••• First-year running back Boston Scott was swamped by first-year linebacker Alex Singleton (6-2, 240) in an 11on-11 drill.

It drew a flag from the officiating crew.

“It was just one of those bang-bang plays where you couldn’t do anything,” Scott said. “I think the best thing is I secured the catch. He timed it up just right so when I literally caught the ball it was catch-boom. We talked. I was kind of mad at first. I didn’t want to talk to him. But he was kind of like, ‘my bad, my bad.’”

••• Kyle Lowry, the point guard of the NBA champion Raptors, stopped in at training camp to get together with players.

Lowry grew up a fan of the Eagles. The product of Villanova and Cardinal Dougherty High chatted with Carson Wentz long after practice was over.

“I love the city of Philadelphia and being here,” Lowry said. “We’re all Philadelphians or fans and we love our city and we bleed green. And it’s pretty awesome to have a chance to come out here and hang out with the guys. I enjoy it and I love every moment of it.”
