McKay’s goal lifts Great Valley over West Chester East

The Great Valley High School boys’ soccer team (4-5) edged West Chester East, 1-0, Tuesday. The Patriots scored the game’s lone goal 22 minutes into the first half when Nate McKay got behind the East defense and slotted his breakaway into the side panel of the goal. Quintin Wrabley (eight saves) got the shutout in goal for Great Valley, making some key saves in the second half as East put on serious pressure as they looked for the equalizer. East goalie Johnny Regester also recorded eight saves.

OXFORD 2, COATESVILL­E 1 >>

The Hornets got goals from junior Zoller Gray and sophomore Dominik Martinez, and senior Tyler Brooks dished out an assist for host Oxford. The Coatesvill­e goal was scored by freshman Nate Delsantro.

WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 2, DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 2 >>

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead on a Chris Comber penalty kick and a Nick McCutch goal, then the Golden Knights tied it at 2-2 with secondhalf goals by Ryan Seelaus and John Park. Rustin goalie Andrew DiStefano had five saves and Jacob Blevins recorded five saves for Downingtow­n East.

BISHOP SHANAHAN 3, AVON GROVE 2 >> Gavin Domsohn’s two second-half goals helped the Eagles to victory. Sean Gingrich scored the other Shanahan goal 90 seconds before the halftime break. Ben Lincoln scored both of Avon Grove’s goals. Shanahan goalie Bryce Domsohn recorded four saves, while Avon Grove netminder Matthew Cordell recorded seven saves.

Field Hockey

CONESTOGA 8, RIDLEY 0 >> The Pioneers (9-1, 5-1) got two goals each from Alex Gurski and Autumn Hill, Amanda Foster scored her first-ever career goal and Carly Hynd, Jessica Mullin, and Kate Galica added a goal and an assist each. For the fifth time this season, the defensive line, anchored by Faith Albertson, Sofia Ries and Lily Wolfe, held their opponent to zero shots on the day. Katie Clemson recorded her sixth shutout of the season. MOORESTOWN FRIENDS 3, WESTTOWN 1 >> For the Moose, Abbie Barth scores a goal, with an assist from Phebe Herlocher. Westtown goalie Sabrina Schoenborn recorded 12 saves. DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 5, UNIONVILLE 3 >> The Whippets (5-3, 5-0) got four goals from Tatum Johnson, and one from Ciara Margetich. Kari Schmidt, Lauren Tinson and Ashley Plzak each dished out assists, and West goalie Sam Pearson recorded five saves. WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 8, SUN VALLEY 0 >> Hilary Hoffman had a hat trick for the Warriors, who also got strong offensive performanc­es from Sam Cantor (two goals), Gianna Cugino (one goal, two assists), Ashley Rivituso (two goals, one assist) and Kylie Patton (two assists). OXFORD 3, COATESVILL­E 2 >> The Hornets won in overtime on a goal by Amanada Holz, assisted by Abby Johnson. Oxford goalie Kirsten Brennan (seven saves) made a key save in overtime to give the Hornets the scoring opportunit­y. Oxford, which trailed 2-0 at halftime, got early second-half goals from Haley Snowden on a lifted shot and Mia Gerrard with an assist from Amanda Holz. Brooke Rush played well in the middle field for Oxford, transition­ing the ball, and Abby Higgins came up big several times in the backfield.

DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 3, WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 0 >> The Cougars, who posted scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 25-18, were led by the fine passing of Jordan Musantry (one ace, 18 digs) and Jess Angeline (32 assists, two kills, 19 digs, one block). UNIONVILLE 3, DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 0 >> The Indians (9-1), who posted scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 28-26, were led by Sophie Brenner (19 kills), Kat Tuerff (10 kills) and Ashlyn Wiswall (36 assists). Unionville remains undefeated in the Ches-Mont League. For West , Audrey Jones had 13 kills, Maddie Weller had six kills and three aces, Jenna Schuda had 11 assists and three aces and Lea Filidore had 14 digs. BISHOP SHANAHAN 3, AVON GROVE 0 >> The Eagles (7-0, 6-0) posted scores of 25-7, 25-8 and 25-10 and were led by strong serving from Cara Shults (seven aces), Mia Caporellie (four aces), Brooke Burns (four aces) and Grace Casagrande (three aces). Today, Shanahan is taking a trip to play Southern Lehigh (20-0), the top-ranked Class AAA team in Pennsylvan­ia. SUN VALLEY 3, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 1 >> The Warriors, who posted scores of 14-25, 20-25, 2927 and 18-25, were led by Jordyn Melnick (five kills), Jaclyn Rawa (25 assists) and Amanda Ball (20 digs). GREAT VALLEY 3, WEST CHESTER EAST 0 >> For the Vikings, the leaders were Elliet Manning had (two kills, 13 assists), Lizzie Carr (four kills. three blocks) and MG Kerns (16 digs). OXFORD 3, COATESVILL­E 2 >> The Hornets, who posted scores of 25-22, 17-25, 2225, 25-20 and 19-17, were led by Sydney Pearson (three aces), Arianna Santos (11 kills, six blocks), Ashley Jones (10 assists), Sara Wyatt (15 digs) and Payton Cozart (nine kills).

UNIONVILLE 184, WEST CHESTER EAST 206, WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 210 >> The Indians earned two victories at a tri-meet at Kennett Square Golf and Country Club Tuesday. Unionville was led by Jack Cooley, who shot his season-best score of 32 (three under par). The Vikings’ low scorer was Victoria Kim (37), and the Golden Knights top golfer was Eric Miller (39). OXFORD 217, SUN VALLEY 271 >> The Hornets (8-6, 3-6) were led by Matt Todd (41), Trevor Dukes-Vincent (43), Joseph Madden (44), Scott Franjesh (44) and Daniel Nowland (45) in the match at Rock Manor Golf Club. WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 205, DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 219 >> The Warriors (9-1) were led by Justin Cinnamond (39), Dylan Kochis (41), Sean Suroweic (41), Dan Carnuccio (41) and Tyler Rickel (43). DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 218, AVON GROVE 253 >> The Cougars (9-2) were led by Jake Leon (42), Evan Drummond (42), Andrew McCook (43), Matt Walsh (44) and Dylan Gute (47) at Whitford Country Club (par 36). STRATH HAVEN 203, KENNETT 215 >> The Blue Demons were led by Marcus Kinney (41), Ben Gehrt (41) and Griffin Gaughan (42) at Hartefield (par 36).

Girls Golf

UNIONVILLE 194, AVON GROVE 214 >> The Indians (12-1, 9-1) were led at Inniscrone Golf Club by freshman Kaitlyn Ferrer (42) and senior Meghan Reilly (44), who each shot their season-best scores. Rachel Doyle was low scorer for Avon Grove with a 53. Today, Unionville plays its last home match of the season at the Kennett Square Golf and Country Club, and seniors Meghan Reilly and Emily Gong will be recognized as part of Senior Recognitio­n Day.

Girls Tennis

DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 6, WISSAHICKO­N 1 >> The Whippets swept the four doubles matches, winning the top three doubles contests in straight sets, and they also were victorious at first singles (Tanya Pant) and second singles (Sophia Koons).

Water Polo

GERMANTOWN ACADEMY 15, MALVERN PREP 13 >> Jack Cassidy scored seven goals and Ryan Cochran five in the loss for Malvern (5-4, 0-2).

Men’s Soccer

WEST CHESTER 2, HOLY FAMILY 0 >> The nationally-ranked No. 17 Golden Rams (5-1) scored both goals within a two-minute span in the first half. The first score came in the 30th minute on a Stephen Thompson tally, marking his second of the season off an assist from Doug Goitia. Two minutes later the Golden Rams doubled their lead when Matt Stevenson scored his first goal of the season.

Women’s Soccer

WEST CHESTER 6TH IN NATIONAL POLL >> The West Chester University women’s soccer team moved up to No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches’ National Poll this week after wins against No. 21 East Stroudsbur­g University and Lock Haven University. The Golden Rams (5-0, 4-0 PSAC) outscored their opponents by a 4-0 margin over the past week, defeating East Stroudsbur­g 1-0 and Lock Haven 3-0. West Chester has only allowed one goal this season.
