J.P. Mascaro hiring amid rising demand
Waste removal company J.P. Mascaro & Sons, which serves Berks County, has a message for people that may have recently lost jobs due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic: “We are hiring.”
The Montgomery Countybased J.P. Mascaro said some sectors — including universities, restaurants and other businesses have shown a reduction in the need for services over the past couple of weeks.
However, there has been an increase in demand in other parts of the business — especially in the residential, municipal and industrial sectors — as residents and companies use this “unique period of time” as an opportunity to perform across-theboard cleaning or cleanouts, according to the company.
“What we’re seeing is different. We have always had a need for help — it’s the nature of the beast for us. People come and go,” said Frank Sau, Mascaro director of communications. “Now, with people confined to their residences and some businesses closing, there is more trash out there.”
He added that trash pickup is an essential service.
“We have to get the trash,” he said.
Sau said the company is looking for laborers, mechanics, technicians and CDL Class A and Class B drivers. He said 30 to 50 new employees are needed for the Pottstown area, and another 30-50 employees for Bridgeport, but added the need extends to Berks County, across Montgomery County and Allentown.
“I want people to know who recently have lost their jobs due to this pandemic that they can come to our recruitment facility in Pottstown or apply online on our website and have an opportunity to work over the longterm in a stable industry with an established company with full health benefits.” J. P. Mascaro & Sons President, Pat Mascaro, said in a statement.
The recruitment facility is at 221 E. High St. and open for walk-in applicants Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 to 11 a.m. According to Sau, the company is doing on-the-spot hiring if applicants qualify.
The center was opened in September 2017 to serve as a hub to hire and train employees for the solid waste and recycling company’s expanding Berks operations.
The company provides daily transportation for employees from the Pottstown center to Mascaro facilities in Berks, including the company’s hauling division on West Neversink Road and the TotalRecycle facility on Lincoln Road, both in Exeter Township.
According to Sau, the TotalRecycle facility, which opened in 2016, currently operates three shifts and runs about 20 hours each day. He said since Feb. 16, the facility has increased from 50 employees to about 90.
“We are an employer that needs help. We are not going to close our doors,” Sau said. “We have jobs — all lights are green.”
