Local teams earn top seeds in District 1 brackets

The Kennett High School boys and the Conestoga High School girls each received the top seeds in their respective PIAA District 1 3A tournaments, at the District 1 seeding meetings via Zoom Saturday.

Chesco teams also received the top seed in the two PIAA District 1 2A tournaments West Chester Rustin (boys) and Bishop Shanahan (girls).

Seedings for the four tournaments are as follows:

Chesco teams hold three of the top eight seeds, starting with Kennett at No. 1, followed by Downingtown West at No. 5 and Conestoga at No. 8. All three of these squads have first round byes as a result of being in the top eight seeds and will open play May 20. Six teams will advance to the PIAA 3A boys state championship tourney.

Three Chesco boys squads in Class 3A will begin play May 18. No. 16 seed Unionville will face No. 17 Souderton, and the winner of that matchup will face No. 1 seed Kennett May 20. No. 21 seed Great Valley will face No. 12 Spring-Ford May 18, and the winner of that contest will play No. 5 seed Downingtown West May 20. No. 10 seed Downingtown East will play 23rd seed Boyertown, and the winner of that game will play No. 7 seed Wissahickon May 20.

Quarterfinals for the boys 3A tourney will be May 22, with semifinals May 25 and the championship final May 27.

Boys 2A

Chesco holds the top two seeds, with West Chester Rustin at No. 1 and Bishop Shanahan at No. 2. On May 19, Rustin will face No. 8 seedSpringfield Township, and Bishop Shanahan will play No. 7 seed

Semifinals for the boys 2A tourney will be May 25, with the championship final May 27.

Girls 2A

Four teams from the District 1 2A girls tournament will advance to the PIAA 2A state tourney, and Chesco teams hold two of the top four seeds Bishop Shanahan is seeded No. 1, and Villa Maria Academy No. 4. On May 18, Bishop Shanahan will face No. 16 Dock Mennonite, while Villa Maria will face 13th seed St. Basil. The winners will advance to the quarterfinals May 20, with semifinals May 25 and
