Lower Merion honors fallen firefighter
Firefighters from throughout Montgomery County paid tribute to one of their own Wednesday as firetrucks and police filed through the streets of Lower Merion as they accompanied the body of Sean DeMuynck.
DeMuynck was killed late Sunday night after responding with the Penn Wynne Overbrook Fire Company to a house fire in Wynnewood.
The procession taking DeMuynck’s body to a funeral home in Havertown began in Norristown and then traveled along the Blue Route, passing through the Lower Merion towns of Rosemont, Bryn Mawr, Haverford, Ardmore Wynnewood and Penn Wynne.
At the township building, Lower Merion officials followed Gov. Tom Wolf’s order and lowered its flag to half-staff to honor DeMuynck.
As the motorcade passed in front of the Lower Merion Township building administration building, firefighters set up ladder trucks on each side of Lancaster Avenue while hoisting an American flag between them.
The procession that passed though the flagged archway was led by six motorcycle police officers and then firetrucks from throughout Montgomery County. Lower Merion and state police also participated.
As the vehicle carrying DeMuynck’s body went by, Lower Merion firefighters stood along the roadway and police saluted.
The vehicles then took DeMuynck into Havertown by making a special trip past the Penn Wynne Overbrook Fire Station that was draped in black bunting. Nearby, a sign at the Penn Wynne Presbyterian Church read, “Rest in Peace FF Sean DeMuynck with love and respect.”
DeMuynck was then taken to Stretch’s Funeral Home in Haverford, where family and additional firefighters were on hand.
