Unionville sweeps Downingtow­n West

In the first round of the 2022 Boys Varsity District 1 Tennis Team Tournament Monday, Unionville swept Downingtow­n West 5-0. The Whippets will face the Garnet Valley-Council Rock South winner on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Longhorns’ singles players Andrew Ou, Andrew Poprik and Matt Miller each won their matches in straight sets. At No. 1 doubles, the team of Matt Farrell and Jack Barrickman defeated West’s Rohit Vipperia and Curt Elvanian, 6-2, 6-0.

EAST 3 » The Raiders rallied for five runs in the third inning on the way to a league win over the Cougars. Josh Howe drove in two runs and pitcher Alex Kuehn struck out six in five innings of work for Coatesvill­e. Andrew Dewese (three hits) and Alex Lehman (two hits) led the way at the plate for East.

WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 9, UNIONVILLE 5 » A solo home run by Mairead Hopkins in the fifth inning gave the Knights’ a lead they would not relinquish in Ches-Mont action. Paige Bentley also smacked a homer for Rustin. Madison Parisi, Jessica Heimberger and Ella Monthei all drove in runs for the Longhorns. DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 2, AVON GROVE 1 » The Whippets jumped out to a 2-0 lead and then held

on for the Ches-Mont win. Pitcher Ava Zettlemoy went 6.1 innings, fanned 15 batters, did not allow an earned run and just four hits for West. Darby Weller chipped in an RBI double for the Whippets. Payton Hale went the distance for the Red Devils and surrendere­d just four hits and struck out 11. SUN VALLEY 6, OXFORD 5 (8 INNINGS) » The Vanguards scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to beat the Hornets. Molly Friel and Sydney Kargulewic­z each had multiple hits for Oxford, and Cecelia Figueroa chipped in by knocking in two runs. COATESVILL­E 3, DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 2 (8 INNINGS) » Sophia Reynolds third hit of the day drove in Caity Hinton to give the Red Raiders the Ches-Mont win in eight innings. Olivia Springer drove in Hailey Burke to tie the game in the seventh and send it to extra innings. Megan Gochenauer earned the win in the circle for Coatesvill­e. Nikki Sudall accounted for East’s runs with a two-run homer.

GREAT VALLEY 9, OXFORD 2 »

The Patriots raced to a 7-1 halftime lead and cruised to a Ches-Mont win over the Hornets. Hayden Darabant notched three goals and Andy Talone added three goals and 10 face off wins for Great Valley. Daniel Siaton chipped in two goals and an assist, and Nick Mort made nine saves in goal for the Pats.

ABINGTON 7, COATESVILL­E 6 (OT) » The Raiders led 5-3 at the half but were outscored 3-1 in the second half and then lost it in overtime. Owen Ellis led the way with three goals and two assists and Tommy Ortega added two goals and an assist for Coatesvill­e. POPE JOHN PAUL 6, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 3 » The Warriors led 2-1 after one period but could not hold off its non-league foe. Charlie Fort, Brett Patton and Seamus Murphy all scored single goals and Patton won 6 of 9 face offs for Henderson.

WRIGHT HONORED BY ATLANTIC EAST » The Atlantic East Conference announced that Immaculata junior third basemen Joey Wright has been named to the Weekly Honor Roll. Wright put in an impressive week at the plate for the Mighty Macs, batting .438, scoring six runs and batting in five runs.

All four Gold Division teams are now 1-1 on the season.
