Union goes one and done in Open Cup

- By Delco Times delcotimes@delcotimes.com

The Union extended their winless streak to five games with Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Orlando City SC in the Round of 32 of the U.S. Open Cup. It was the Union’s first Open Cup game this season.

Luckily for Chester’s pro soccer team, its loss doesn’t mean a thing in the MLS standings. The Union resume regular season play when they host Eastern Conference rival New York Red Bulls Saturday at Subaru Park.

Orlando struck for two goals during a span of three minutes. Ercan Kara scored in the 54th minute to break a scoreless tie and Andres Perea’s goal three minutes later gave Orlando a 2-0 advantage.

Stuart Findley got the Union on the board with a goal in the 77th minute. A header by Kai Wagner off a set piece in stoppage time was denied by Orlando goalie Mason Stajduhar.

The Union have posted three draws and two losses over their past five games. Their last victory was a 1-0 decision over Columbus on April 9. And yet, Philadelphia sits atop of the Eastern Conference with a 5-1-4 record (19 points).
