Rose Imogene Denny Hobbs
Rose Imogene (“Jeanie”) Denny Hobbs was born on December 19, 1922. Jeanie, the first daughter
of Harold Plummer Denny and Rosannah Cuyler Denny, was born in West Chester, PA at Chester County Hospital. On March 24, 1924, the Denny Family was blessed with the
birth of a second daughter, Jacqueline, completing the family of four. Jeanie attended the
Gay Street School, graduated from West Chester High School (1940) and earned her undergraduate degree in primary education from West Chester State Teachers’ College (now West Chester University) in
1944. While attending West Chester State, Jeanie met and married Wilbur Eugene Hobbs (born 9/17/1921) of Philadelphia, PA. They remained married until Wilbur’s untimely death on 9/13/1992. Throughout their lives together Jeanie and Wil lived in Chester County, Delaware County and Philadelphia.
Jeanie was also an accomplished pianist, and pen-and-ink sketch and watercolor artist. In her retirement years she nurtured and grew her skills creating needlepoint and cross-stitch works for her enjoyment and for friends and family.
She especially enjoyed attending rehearsals and performances of the renowned Philadelphia Orchestra at both the Academy of Music and the Kimmel Center.
Jeanie’s spiritual life was demonstrated by her commitment to West Chester’s Chapel of the Ascension and later the Church of the Holy Trinity.
At Holy Trinity Jeanie was a member of the Bell Choir continuing her love of musical performance and communication.
We remember Jeanie as a loving mother, aunt, sister, daughter, mother-in-law, and friend. Those who passed through her classrooms remember
her as a caring and patient teacher who provided foundational educational support in their earliest
school years. Foundational support that continued to be demonstrated throughout their subsequent educational pursuits and in their adult years.
We miss her greatly but find comfort in knowing that her soul is now in God’s warm embrace and the embrace of her ancestors.
Jeanie is survived by her son, Wilbur; her daughter-in-law, Carolyn; her niece Harriet Lynn Starr; numerous cousins; and the family of her late life companion Junius “Bob” Haith, and many friends.
